KV 5 cyl hydraulic lifters

Hi all,
my coupe had a rattly lifter it got to me so i decided to pull them out and clean them. I got two used lifters before pulling them out so i would have a couple of extras to play with. I discovered that they were a different type and had a spring clip holding them together! I managed to pull them to bits and wash and prime them with oil. I had to make a small press tool up to reasemble them though. The later ones i got were much easier they just come apart and are of slightly larger piston diameter but were otherwise interchangeable. If i was going to do this again I would source a good used set of the later type. Does anyone know when the changeover happened to later type lifters?? My car is an 89 Quattro.
