Passat B5 1998 won't idle

My passat B5 ADR will turn over on starter motor, tries firing but it will not start but rather a hiss/squeal occurs and cuts off. I have replaced the spark plugs, coolant temp sensor, air filter, checked MAF, belts fine. If you rev it, it will turn over and run rough but if you try ease it down to idle it starts backfiring and when it reaches about 1000 rpm it won't idle and just dies.

Anyone experienced this? The car was running well and it suddenly stopped one day and it wouldn't start properly after.

Probibly got a dirty great air leak or a collapsing breather hose.
