For a daily driver?
I do 500ks a week, mixture of open road and stuck in traffic driving.
My 5 Series BMW consumes about $120 a week on average for this commute, which isn't an issue, but it would be nice to cut this back a little.

Is an old 1999 too old to consider for a daily driver? I was thinking cheap 1.8Turbo A3 3dr with an automatic gearbox. (so that my partner can drive it too).
I tend to do my own repairs and servicing.

Its pretty much the same car as a Mk4 GTI.

The auto would be the bit I'd be concerned about - if it was a manual they should be fine. The normal VAG stuff will break / fail from time to time but if you can fix most stuff yourself it's not a major.
