The X5 is probably a better drivers car, but the Q7 is a great all-rounder and has heaps of space.

down here in the South we use them properly, as off-roaders

of course, it does lead to the occasional "mishap"

fortunately the air-suspension almost allows them to balance on 3 wheels

5 months later, and several cubic metres of parts as freight from the UK, just about ready to go in the spray booth today

the offending tree-stump had slid neatly past the lower chassis-rail, wiped off the suspension (obviously!), but the rail was only about 3 mm out of line and no other chassis damage of any importance, at all! 3-D chassis measure done, repair cert. issued and almost ready to go back on the road

updated now to 2010 facelift spec all around, with facelift s-line bumpers, led bi-xenon headlights, led front blinkers, and led taillights

was a very highly spec'd 1-owner early nz-new car, with panorama roof which I believe is quite rare, sports seats, full leather, most s-line options, though not actually an s-line

"water"?

that's just good ol' Otago mud and dust.  Something soccer mums don't see in the Countdown carpark

interesting point you raise though, because despite all that abuse, there is not a single electrical system that was not still working, although I suspect the alternator might have a bad diode

Have to admit the 4.8 V8 has an intoxicating sound, but 4.2 tdi had serious potential! (And 7 seats)

I'm not really looking forward to the fuel bill of the 4.2 FSI

It does have the same 7 seats, though

Painted and ready to reassemble, but then progress slowed while I found a set of S-line lower outside mouldings (blades) for doors and front wings from Germany and UK. Those things turned out to be rare - I guess everyone else in Europe does the same upgrade, and they are far too expensive to buy new

Also waiting for the various adapters for the front wiring to arrive in a few days time from Germany. Needs adapters for headlights, DRLs, and even foglights (which now use a different type of plug)

Needed to add headlight washers too, meaning modifications to loom and an additional relay and pump, etc. In most markets it's illegal to run xenons without washers. Anyone know why that is, and if we have the same regulation here in NZ?  I'm guessing not, or there would not be so many bad aftermarket xenon kits on ricers that blind us all at night. The cost and hassle of fitting washers would stop most of them before they started, if it was a WOF failure

Meanwhile the assembled front grille is stuck sitting on the floor. That's a whole lot of chrome and black Glasurit tho, just there!

New electronics were needed for front and rear lights to, and those have to go to a main dealer to have "component protection" unlocked. You can't just replace parts on these cars now without an online connection to the Fatherland to authorise the part to work!  Maybe a result of the number of stolen cars disappearing off to Russia to be broken for parts - or just a way for dealerships to make more money?

About to receive all new brake rotors and pads, after painting

I would not want to be the groomer who gets that job once she's all back together

Thanks. Keen to know the answer to my question about headlamp washers (above) if you or anyone else knows the answer please? :)

Nice one, looks great. They look a lot less behemoth than the 1st generation.
