What's the technique for removing a dead Mk4 door lock when the door is locked closed? Is it just get brutal and smash it?

if you haven't got the door card off. Lower the window and pull the outer lower seal out. Then you should be able to see the top door lock. Then get a long screw driver and find the seam where the lock body half join together. hit it with a hammer and split the half's apart. This should pop the locking gears. then the door should open and you can pull the door card off.
