Still trying to get the speedo to work, last thing I think before WOF time. I located the speed sensor and it has a fair bit of corrosion on the connections. had a go at cleaning it but I was rushing a bit and I don't think I did a good enough job :D
Will extract it tonight if I get chance and clean it properly.

i'm really enjoying watching this come together...nice work

Thanks guys :) It's sooo close now.
Pulled out the vehicle speed sensor. I think it's busted. There was plenty of gunk and corrosion in the connector but the O-ring is broken on the sensor itself too.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, well, I pulled the other half of the speed sensor out, the above was only half of it! I cleaned it all up more, clicked it together properly and screwed it back in place after testing that the drive part on the driveshaft worked.

And it works! Managed 6kph on my drive :D
Better book a WOF then, see what happens!!

Pretty sure my rear diff is locked and the control isn't working so that's another thing to fix.

This is the view of the throttle linkage is from passenger footwell correct.?

Appears the rubber bush has disintegrated hence the cable tie.

I don't think this rubber bush is not longer available.

Purchased these 2 bushes today from VW dealer.

Made a clean bit. Testing a few last things before first WOF. Number plate lights didn't work. I'm sure I tested them before. Both bulbs were toast anyway so that's now sorted.

So I booked it in for tomorrow morning. Gulp...

Have you booked in for WOF tomorrow Rob, or for a professional groom in preparation for it?

After it's on the road it's going to Finer Details to get a serious 25 hour prep and ceramic coat.

I wouldn't be doing ceramic coating.
No question when done (as long as the paint prep is perfect) they are brilliant. They resist swirling and have that "I've just been waxed" look without work.

But you CAN get that look by polishing/waxing - it takes time and work. You can remove swirls with the right tool and polishes. And shed time with your favourite classic isn't really work  :D

The problem with ceramics is that if you plan on keeping the car long term, you will eventually get marks/swirls, and then you have a problem. Because the ceramic is integrated into the paint and extremely hard, refinishing is problematic.

I wouldn't do a classic car in ceramic.
I might do a car I was keeping for less than 2-3 years and I was too busy to wash/wax regularly.

Hi,id avoid the ceramic coating, and stay with natural wax,as the paint needs feeding from the wax(carnauba, bees wax etc..no silicone) the ceramic coating most likely with prevent it....and watch out for sunscreen as it eats into the clear coat!

schattenblau

great video, divisive comments from various detailing professionals

>:D

how many proponents of ceramic coatings actually correct the paint before applying their magic coating ?

the pros/cons of paint coatings has been going on since the days of duraseal etc.

WOF Time....

Failed :D As expected really.

Rust on the sill - expected that.
Steering play
Top mounts not sitting properly
Exhaust hitting driveshaft (expected that too)
Steering rod hitting things it shouldn't (it's the LHD one, I thought it fit. bugger)
Also the speedo stopped working again on the way back.

Bugger, oh well back to work.
Whats the cause of the steering play?
