The vacuum lines looked pretty tired.

So I looked a bit closer and found that they are not in good shape! The rubber is hard and makes cracking noises if you try to bend it.

So I cut new ones to length but I need to wait for the clips and joiners to arrive to finish the job. They apparently cleared customs days ago.

Finally got my joiners and clips and finished making my new vac lines. No change to the stalling when warm. Need to try a few more things now I've ruled that out.

New development on the speedo, I can hear the speedo pulses coming through a speaker!! So I assume that means an earth fault in its wiring. Still need to trace the wires and see exactly where they go, I don't think it's as simple as a ground, signal and switched live.

I tried tracing the wires to the speed sensor tonight with no success - talk about spaghetti! But then I dug through my documentation and found this. Which means I can run a new switched live and ground to it and see if it cures the problem.

You've been a busy boy. Was the Vac line supplied from NZ?

Idle stabilisation valve could be playing up?

No, Ebay. UK I think

Dash and various gearbox speed sensors removed for some troubleshooting with a friend's help help later this week.

Also I've decided to call it with the drive to Leadfoot - it's in two weeks and it's just not worth the risk. Even if I get the WoF by then the car will be unproven. Still planning to go, just in another car.

So I think I'll get the front bumper removed and sort out the things I need to there like headlight washers and broken intercooler mounts, plus I will get my silicone hoses soon so I can do those too.

I ordered a new set of HT leads today just in case.

So it?s your intent to diagnose the fault off the vehicle?

Yep that was the plan! We failed to get the dash to come on properly so gave up on that to avoid damaging it, but proved that the factory sender works. Tried all new wiring, no change, so it must be the dash unit itself. Sigh.

Hey rob
I have a new gear stick knob (repro) from classic quattro if you want it FOC. I got it and then had the original recovered so I don?t need it any more. Please send your post address and I will mail it to you.

Thanks for the offers, but John Stone sent me one a few weeks ago! I haven't got around to fitting it yet :)

Good news, the dash and sensor have been proven to work. Turns out the wiring diagram I was using was for a 1985 car and mine is a 1984 build. So I was testing the wrong pins!

I did some tinkering this morning and tested continuity from signal wire to dash and it works. So all of the parts have been proven to be functional outside the car. Confused now.
Haven't had time yet to re-fit and test again.

This is certainly putting up some resistance, pardon the pun, to actually getting on the road.

So you've had the dash working in the car previously correct? So it could only be an intermittent circuit somewhere.. Could be the connector, could be a broken wire, or even a broken down wire that won't carry the required current. Best of luck!

OK, so the speedo works on the bench. Maybe check that the mechanical thingy that drives the speedo sensor is working, ie no stripped cogs or drivers. Or drive it with a drill, as you did on the bench. I'm guessing you have a good power supply and negative supply to the sensor. I don't know what the power supply on these cars should be but some hall speedo sensors have battery voltage (they reduce voltage inside them), others have 5 volt, reduced from the instrument cluster. Does anything else in the car need a road speed signal,  ie cruise control, transmission controller, engine controller, radio, wipers, that voice warning system, etc. (Just some ideas).
One of those circuits could be faulty pulling down the speedo sensor output which, if it's a hall sensor, will only be 5 volt high and 0 volt low. Maybe cut the speedo sensor wire at the instrument cluster and at the sensor and connect a new direct wire, just to test, (as you did on the bench). Good luck

The speedo is working at last!
The problem was wiring after all. I thought I'd tested the wiring by connecting a switched live to the signal wire and putting a tester on the other end, where I got a 12v live.
But it turned out that somewhere the signal wire to the dash connector was hooked up to a switched live, and also connected to the speech synthesiser, so the pulses from the sender were being ingnored by the dash, but clicks were coming from Patrizia's speaker.
I decided to bin the lot and run a new live, earth and signal wire. And it's working!

I also sorted a separate switched live for the pin that powers the backlight on the odometer, which wasn't working. My mate swapped out the bulbs for LEDs in the holders, so it should last now. And it's readable .

I think I've sorted the idling issue too. A video from Gears and Gasoline about spark plugs reminded me that I changed them, and maybe they could be at fault, so I bought some new ones. Bosch weren't available so I went for the NGK equivalent.
