Horch

According to the part number it?s already been replaced with an exchange unit. Measure the spool end float to gauge wear.

The head is out!
Almost all of the exhaust manifold studs were loose. I can't find any cracks in the exhaust manifold, which is good. It's pretty mucky and corroded inside.
Dropped the turbo off at Diesel and Turbo in Petone for them to check out.

Bullet proof! Nice work, very brave.

RobClubley

Dropped the turbo off today at a local specialist for assessment, and the head and exhaust manifold to another one.

The manifold is warped and has been leaking quite a bit. Will get that machined. Waiting for assessment on the other stuff.

I'd definitely rebuild that, I'd recommend Steve Murch but he's not usually so fast as he seems swamped most times.

x2 for Steve - if it needs to be done.

Head work that's being done:

Assessment from Diesel and Turbo in Petone:

The exhaust housing has a few cracks but it will go again.

Turbine shaft has been rubbing on heat shield and bearing housing is eroded. We are trying to find some part to repair.

Well I'm not getting my torque wrench in there!
Bumper off next then. And work out how to get around the welded-in metal front panel.

Top job...
Nothing quite like putting stuff back together that is nice and clean and has been machined up etc.

RobClubley

Bumper off, and it seems the internet is wrong about the crank bolt being 24mm. I don't have a bigger socket, so need to get one. Guessing 26 or 27mm.
Also I painted some bits.

M18 which is 27mm socket if it is the same an AAN?

If it is the same then this BMW crank bolt may fit if you need one, thread FYI.

You got the right head gasket? 7A bore is 0.5mm larger than 20vt so generic Victor Reinz head gasket may not fit (quite right), see thread FYI make up your own mind. **Sorry your engine is not 7A, I am completely wrong I think? Ignore the rest then..

I have some spare gaskets from the Victor Reinz 5 cyl head gasket kit (which I just bought) which I think are for the 10 valve (well I don't know what they are for), exhaust and throttle body I think. Can let them go for cheap + shipping. Post pics if you need them and I will see what is spare in the kit.

RobClubley

Will check the gasket against the old one and make sure.

My new wastegate diaphragm arrived. Picking up the repaired turbo this morning.

I found these gaskets on the supercheap website which I think will fit the wastegate. They look similar to the 034motorsports wastegate gaskets, ie: without the fire ring that the OEM gasket has. Should have the car going next weekend so I will find out if they leak or not. Maybe gasket sealer will work if not. For $7 each worth a shot.

Where did all that oil come from, was the wastegate diaphragm torn? So you must have had a massive boost leak?

That's what I wondered too. It's more like oily rust than just oil. I got the wastegate tested and apparently it was leaking. Which is why I bought a new diaphragm.

Had a look at my engines crank bolt yesterday, KG turbo. Found it was a 27mm so likely yours is the same.

RobClubley

Yep mine is definitely 27mm.

The head is back!
