My keyring came from Ebay :D

The pics would be awesome, thanks. There are some mysterious wires and boxes which I assumed were an aftermarket alarm.

If it had a car phone some of thw wiring could be from that as well?
Is the factory stuff ok? And sorting the aftermarket stuff being the issue?

So far I've been concentrating on stripping things out and I haven't started on tracing the wiring yet. I'm doing this in 30-90 minute bits when I can so it'll be a while I think :D

The ECU should be under the dashboard, above the drivers side footwell. It's a precarious place, that position can be threatened by water leaking in from the lower corner of the windscreen (one of the most common places for rust on a quattro).

Ah I haven't taken that panel off yet apart from to get to the audio cables. It'll be coming out next before I start working on the wiring :D

Interesting.  Do you know when it was repainted after a number of repairs?  The left rear quarter panel was pretty rough with an amount of obvious filler..
It was painted outside only, that is, the engine bay wasn't done.  The new paint is a slightly different shade - a bit more red than original.
The car has clearly had a history since it was imported.  It'd be good to fill in a few gaps.

RobClubley

Yeah I was wondering the same.
I'm the ninth NZ owner including the import company and it has lived in Auckland, Wellington, Auckland, Tauranga, Taupo, Wellington :)

So I bought it off Rex, around 2000 and had it for approx 1 -2 years "cant recall"
Rex told me "from memory"  that it had a big rear shunt, and one of the rear quarter panels were completely replaced - I believe by the guy who changed the upholstery to red,  had the shunt repaired and sold it to Rex etc.
Also I was told by a panel beater that the roof had been replaced, through a possible roll over, this would have explained the missing sunroof gutter system, as every time it rained I got soaked "the sunroof was down"
Believe I spent approx 8k on mechanical fix ups through Continental Cars Audi, suggest you get in touch with them as they will have the records on what was done.
I sold it not because of the mechanical costs, but because I didnt have anywhere to store it, and do what your doing to it now
Hope this answers some questions for you

RobClubley

Sounds like it had a pretty big accident at some point :o
