I'm glad to see you addressing the running gear Rob, often people over look the important stuff and instead concentrate on making it look pretty instead.
All of the bushes, brakes, shocks are no doubt in need of replacement. This will be what makes the car feel and drive how it should, keep up the great work you're doing.

Thanks, that means a lot coming from you :)

A quick lick of paint and this'll be alright. Right?

The solid indicators thing sounds like a fused relay. Was a fairly common issue on MK2 golfs

Feeling a bit disheartened tonight, got some flare spanners for the brake lines, went down to try them and the nuts are so rounded that the spanners won't even go on.
Then I had a look around under the car and as I was thinking it looked to be in a bit of a depressing state I spotted some rust, which when I poked it turned out to be quite a big hole that was somehow missed during the repairs.
I thought I was close to the point where I might be able to drive the car, but it's nowhere near, and the future holds much more spending. Sigh.

Next steps - carry on stripping out the suspension and brakes, start cleaning thngs up and work out how many more bolts and bushes and parts I need!

Oh and I found someone who can apparently supply replacement OEM ABS looms. Over $600 each and there are four. Pretty sure just the outer insulation is gone so that'll be a repair job :D

Don't feel too bad Rob, remember the cars is 30 years old!!
If it were me I'd drop the lot, pull all of the susp out and start a fresh. Sure there's parts to be bought but a lot of it will be cleaning and painting which come WOF time will make it all worth it.
Chip away bit by bit you'll get there.

Yeah and it sat for over ten years, half of that outside.

I think it's more having to admit to myself that it's going to be a lot longer than I hoped. I obviously had my rose tinted specs on when I first looked under there :D
So, I'm resigned to driving a 275,000km Mazda for the foreseeable future.

I am going to pull out the lot, it's the only way to make sure it's right and avoid doing it all again later.

That exhaust looks like it's toast too. This is on my Christmas list but Santa's out of cash this year!!

It was from speed.co.nz
Everyone else I asked said they were no longer available.

Quick Google says they aren't legal. Bugger.

But this is an NZ site, copper Bundy tubing. I assume that's okay?

I thought that steel line is mandatory.
I think thatcopper is too soft and the flares, even double as they should be, are not strong enough.

Sounds like copper nickel is okay from what I can find.

Shipping from UK is outrageous.
Shipping from Germany is cheap as chips.
Absolutely no idea why the difference......
