Maybe just switch the software to test mode, should bring the L/100km down

Haha. Yeah that might fix millage and emissions...

Still not getting great economy from this vehicle. Quite disappointed, pretty sure the dealer told me I could expect 800 - 900k's per tank. I only ever use sport mode when passing on the open road and it's not that often I use it. Thought I would see what the other dealers are telling people. Found one on Trade Me and sent off an email asking "exactly how many k's per tank of diesel would this vehicle use"

"Hi Karl,
Some of our clients are getting 1000km per tank.
It of course depends on how good a driver you are, how loaded the ute is, is there a trailer being towed, is it highway driving, the variables are endless....
Cheers **** "

The BS game is strong.
The most I've seen from mine is 610k's - the worst was around 450k's.
I'm going to ask a few more dealers, then present my findings to VW NZ and see what they make of this.

Woah 450 is poor! Only done one tank so far and got 750 part loaded and with a jetski on the back for half the time. Mix of around town and open road. Hardly use sport mode as I'd read it uses significantly more gas. Truck has done 14,000kms. What tyres do you have? I'd expect my standard continental 17s would be a lot better than some of the 285 off road rubber that seems to be the trend these days.

Poor indeed! I'm almost certain there is something wrong with it. I'm running pretty basic 265mm tires on 20" wheels. Very rarely use sport mode.

Seriously guys? That mileage is pathetic for a modern diesel.  Firstly my A6 3.0ltr TDI quattro does comfortably 8ltrs/100 and has a lot more power.  My Colorado with the 2.8ltr TDI 6-speed manual regularly averages less than 7.5ltrs/100 and a recent run to Auckland had it less than 7.  I only get into double figures as recently by towing a hire tandem (read big and solid) with a 3-series Beemer on board.  And that was to Taranaki and back, hardly a flowing road.
So with an 80 ltr tank it's easy to pick up 1000km per tank in normal use.

It *might* be surprising how much difference the wheels can make - it they are slightly different sized, but perhaps also more weight towards the outside etc - I know I've manage to nearly double the consumption on some VERY small cars, by over tiring them.

Agree with the above. Something is wrong..... I have done 57k in the last year in mine and drive it sports relatively often.  I avg about 8.5l/100km over this time. Has factory 17s on it.

Best almost 900km and worse 700km towing trailer and racecar.

Thanks for the info. I am bombarding the dealer with it. 900km is exactly what I hoped for and why I ditched the Hilux for an Amarok.

Mine has only done 10,000kms.  Last 3,000kms averaging about 10.4l/100km.

Mainly Auckland driving, so lots of stop/start and short trips.  Sometimes I'm chilled with the throttle sometimes I put the hammer down.

Those big fat wheels are probably not helping things, try a factory set for a few tanks.

Agreed.
I've put it into Conti's for testing. They've given me another one - 2016 2wd HL 420 with factory 17" wheels.
We took it away to Rotorua on the weekend and it was doing 9/100 almost everywhere, around town it raised slightly to 9.2/100.
Much better than my one. Looks as though it will get around 750 - 800k's to the tank. Possibly more.

Would have preferred another 4m HL truck to compare apples with apples.

What about roof racks? Sports bar or canopy?

We're off down country tomorrow and will let you know what we get. Will be 4 up and lightly loaded. Will also leave the roof racks on. I expect we'll get 800+

Thanks. Looking forward to the result. We had 3 adults and 2 kids in the loan vehicle, with 5 push bikes on the back and loaded up with gear on our trip away last week and it still gave good economy, unlike my one.
Conti's have come back after testing the vehicle for a week and said there is nothing wrong with it - Again.
I'm not convinced.

It has roof and ladder racks.

I had a T3 Transporter, with a Subaru 2.5 inside, and when I fitted the 3.5M roof racks, fuel consumption was about 25% HIGHER!  :o

I actually stopped the first time, after an hour to see if I had a fuel leak, because the gauge was dropping so fast!

Didn't make much difference around town (12.5 with or without), but consumption was over 12L/100kms, between Whangarei and Auckland, but without the racks it would normally have been about 9.5.

Those racks were tubular, about 3500mm long and with 8 or so cross bars. No load on them either.

I took them to Auckland the last time, saw the horrendous fuel consumption again and gave them away before I came home  ;D

Maybe just switch the software to test mode, should bring the L/100km down

This would bring emissions down but fuel consumption would go up. So maybe it is in test mode.

Karl, I took some notes from my 4m Auto all Auckland driving with big wheels and road tyres, so maybe comparable to yours.  Canopy and no roof racks.

Cockle Bay to CBD, early very light traffic, distance 21km, average speed 51kmh, ave consump 9.0l/100km

General Auckland driving, short stop start runs, plus some trips into the city with heavy traffic, distance 535km, average speed 30kmh, ave consump 10.8l/100km

Thanks Rob. My one is doing 14.4L/100 around town so no where near as good as your one. Vert suggested it could be the MAF. Conti's say they tested the MAF and found no faults, but I think they just plugged it in and scanned for general faults.

Dad got the same story with his then new TDI Passat, his average on a tank went from over 1000ks to under 800 yet he was told nothing was wrong.
When push came to shove someone from EMD went to Conti's to diagnose and the airflow meter was found to be faulty.
Once replaced it was back to 1000ks per tank, your truck has something wrong with it. No doubt about it.

Most of the time those f*#kers check for faults.. they plug their VAS505(somefunkingarbitrynumber) tool in and just push Auto scan.

they don't actually bother to check the measuring block of the MAF to see what the MAF is actually reading At idle / under throttle (no load) / under throttle (under load i.e. motorway driving)

MAFs only ever seem to lodge errors if they have been unplugged or have burnt out completely.
