Heres the report from Conti's. After talking to Vert, I specifically asked them to check the MAF. Looks like they did what you said Anton - just general scan. They had their guy drive it home to Huntly and put about 400k's on it, only to tell me there is nothing wrong with it. Might need to get the VW tech guy from EMD to look at it and do some real testing.

Our trip down country last week which consisted of 80% open road driving at a leisurely 100kph max, and 20% city stop start worked out at 740kms from 68L. So around 9.1L/100km. So you may get down to 8.5 for 100% open road but it would be a struggle.

Interestingly the fuel light came on at 740kms with 12L in the tank and range on the trip computer showing 120kms to go. So pretty accurate which surprised me.

Thanks for the data Trofeo, we had a loan Amarok and it did almost exactly what your one did with 3 adults, 2 kids the tray full of luggage and 5 mountain bikes on the back. It was doing 9/100 almost everywhere.

The last tank was all around town driving and it worked out at bang on 10L/100km. All light throttle, 1 or 2 up and maybe 100kgs max in the tray. I'm guessing with a heavy foot and a half ton load it may hit 12L/100km. Doubt we'd see 14 without towing something.

CBD to East Auckland last night at 18:15 so busy traffic but not peak rush hour:

8.9l/100km
38 mins
34kmh average speed
21km distance

I was very chilled with throttle, just cruising.

Wonder if you are affected by this?

Amarok Fuel Line Recall

As part of its ongoing monitoring of the vehicle fleet, Volkswagen Commercial have identified possible leaks in the fuel pipe within the engine compartment of Volkswagen Amaroks in New Zealand. In order to avoid any accidental damage to the fuel lines, a chafe protector is being fitted at the affected points as part of a global recall programme.

Volkswagen New Zealand will contact the owners of these vehicles as soon as possible.

does anyone know if the odo and the speedo are linked on the amarok? given the speedo reads 10% higher than actual speed (reads 110 at 100km/h), does this mean the odometer reads high too? so a 110,000km amarok has only actually covered 100,000kms?

If so, then the fuel usage is actually 10% worse as you aren't going as far per tank as indicated.

I had read the speedo can be adjusted via VCDS, so i'll be getting this done at some stage. Sick of being told by my 5yr old that i'm speeding!

Had quite a bit of activity from the dealer and service department over the last 2 days. They've purchased a new MAF and have sent it up to be fitted along with a bunch of fuel vouchers as a gesture of good faith. They've promised to do what ever it takes including swapping this truck out for another the same or a deal on one of the new V6 TDi's once they arrive. Hopefully the MAF sorts it out though.

They've gone off the boil somewhat, last I heard they were sending it to CCS. Will follow up on it tomorrow.

Sorted yet?
With a diesel, AFR is down to how much fuel is injected - was wondering if the injector timing and/or rail pressure was out as that would have a similar affect as retarded ignition timing and/or poor combustion - a loss of efficiency and thus poor fuel consumption and power?
These are my thoughts and opinions - sometimes I'm wrong, but not often ;-)

The dealer is keen to do what ever it takes to sort it out. They've installed a new MAF and sent me a bunch of fuel vouchers.
New MAF made no difference, still guzzling the diesel. Latest tank only got just over 500k's which is pretty poor.

Took the Amarok to kerikeri and back last week. Unladen, driver only (except for some trips kerikeri to opua and back), and managed to get 8.2L/100km for the 600kms I covered.

I've had the engine remapped by glidn and the results have been great. More torque, and as a result the gearbox holds the higher gears longer. Way more punch, and makes the vehicle feel a lot lighter. I suspected fuel economy had worsened as I was seeing 10.4 - 11.0 but after last week I'd have to blame my right foot   ;D

Have still been logging the fuel usage. It seems to have improved (very) slightly with the new MAF, but still a long way from the economy other Amarok owners are seeing. I'm getting around 580 - 620 k's per tank. Speaking to other owners with similar vehicles, they are getting 800 - 900 k's per tank  >:(

Had a late model 4m HL for a courtesy car while mine was getting a service. This was a 2017 model. Didn't have it for long, but I was driving it hard in sport mode and couldn't get the average fuel usage above 7.2/100. My truck runs between 12 - 14/100, so there is a noticeable difference there that is quite obvious. Spoke to Vert1 and one of his customers has the same truck as mine and gets 850k's per tank around town and close to 1000 k's on a long trip. He tows a 2t trailer and said it doesn't seem to affect the usage much. Think I will go back to VW / EMD and present the data I've been logging. The comments about bigger wheels and roof racks causing this seems a bit off to me.

I've been reading a bit about the various tyre upgrades recently, and I'm tending towards the nitto terra grapplers. However one reviewer claimed his economy went from 21-22mpg down to 17-18 mpg as soon as he changed to them from the factory tyres on a land cruiser. Yikes!

Yes, I've seen similar issues with All Terrain tires. Quite a jump!
