Hey all - needing some new tyres for the R. Been loyal to the Goodyear F1 asymmetric 1 and 2 for ages. Thinking about some Hankooks. Any suggestions as there are so many options now. Couple of years ago it was just Dunlops vs Bridgestones vs Goodyears and the expensive euros. Running stock 18s Thanks to all in advance.

There was a special in the Herald today for Michelin's.  $320 for PS3 225/40R18s from some place called Herb Morgan Tyres.  Might be worth a look?  I've got Bridgestone RE003s on mine and no complaints.

Depends on what you are after,

I removed a pretty good condition set of Eagle F1 Assym 2. Put a new set of Nexen UniBlue on.
Transformed the car. Nice and quiet, grips well in the wet and dry. Overall could not be happier.

Found the Eagle's sidewall perhaps too hard for the MK4 R32 platform. So it typically felt like the car was on blocks of wood.

Whats the load rating of the Nexen UniBlue? The same as the Eagle F1 Assym 2?

Honestly I have no idea. Just needed new tyres. They were in stock and asked me to give them a go.
But really happy with them.

Thanks for the feedback - after a really good all-round tyre. I don't really want to spend more than $250-300 max per corner.

Depending on where you go, you can get a full set of Nexen's for approx. $800 for a full set, fitted, balanced and wheel alignment done too.
They spent almost 2 hours adjusting everything on my R32.

Pretty close to the price of RE003's when bridgestone offers their buy 3 get 1 free.

Thanks Jay - heard good things about the Re003. You swear by them? Was told the 002's were a tad too soft but the 003 were a huge improvement. How often do they do the 3 get 1 free deal?

I guess it makes you wonder how much margin Bridgestone really has? if they can make money on giving you a tyre for free + margin on other 3 tyres also?
On the Golf platform specifically, RE003 excluded. I have used/had RE001, RE002, RE050 and RE050A, G grid II, G Grid III.
Tested on MK2 GTI, MK3 GTI,MK3 VR6, MK4 GTI, MK4 R32, MK5 GTI and MK5 TDI.

Would I honestly have a bridgestone tyre on my golf or any car for that fact? Me personally no.
Was let down by them once too many, especially in the wet.

Are they bad tyre? I do not think so, perhaps just not the right tyre for a golf, again this only my view. I'm sure many have great/positive feedback, which is great.

Hankooks definitely worth a look IMO. The V12s run great on our A4. V12s are directional. The other one worth a look at is the S1 evo. They are asymmetric (non-directional). I have no experience of the latter though.

I just got a set of Bridgestone RE003's and an alignment with the buy one get the next half price deal, so buy 3 get 1 free. $850 all up and they spent 2.5hrs on it.

I rang them on the 25th March, the day the deal ended and they happily agreed to do it on the 1st of April for me. They even had to order to tyres in ready for the 1st.
Really great service from the Bridgestone team at Team Hutchinson Ford.
Swapped my old ATR Sport onto my spare no extra charge.
Will be going there for all my future needs now :)

Being devils advocate here

For the last 6 months i've been using Nexan Nfera SU1s on the Audi TT and more recently on our family car Fuga 450GT (250kw 4.5L V8)

Guy at work runs them on his 3.0Si BMW Z4 and speaks volumes about them as well

Found them to be a quiet tyre in the Fuga and offer great levels of grip in wet and dry in the TT for spirited driving.

Awesome Bridgestone have the buy3 get one free deal until 24th! The Bridgestone dealer is trying to persude me into the new S001  :)

s001 - waste of time, not even as good as the old re050, which is the oem tyre for the new gti clubsport...

Ended up getting the RE003. Quite impressed with the performance in the dry and wet...but definetly lacks the feel/responsiveness of the Eagle F1 Asymmetric. Wonder if its anything to do with tyre pressures. Have the RE003 @ 37psi Interested to know what everyone has their tyres pumped up to?

The Red Warrior

Pirelli P7 at 38psi front and 36psi rear.
I only think they're average tyres.
Think I'll try Michelin Pilot Sport 4 next.

Although the Pirellis refuse to wear out, damn it!

heylinb4nz

I have never driven on uber expensive tyres before, the best tyre i've ever run is Falken FK452 on a 205rwkw MR2, at the moment I run Nexan Nfera Su1 on the TT.

On that subject are people here doing track days that require Pirellis, Pilot Sports, Eagle F1s etc etc ??? or just using them for spirited driving on the roads ??

Track days fair enough but for the road i'm keen to understand what I am missing out on running Nexan SU1 at $300 over say Pilot Sports at $600 a pop ???
