My brakes are binding when the car is hot
My research tells me that it's probably the piston in the master cylinder binding when hot and the only fix is to replace the master cylinder. Apparently there is a BMW master cylinder that can be swapped in and may be easier to source.
Does anyone know about this?

The interchangeable part you've heard about is the brake bomb: brake hydraulic accumulator, not the master cylinder. The BMW one is a direct replacement for the WR urquattro, but not  so for the MB or RR. (Source: quattroforum)

Here's a link to a discussion of the binding problem, and considering it being master cylinder related.

I was able to source the tandem master cyl for an MB quattro under the original supplier ATE part number. You will need to confirm but I understood the MB and RR had the same brake system and possibly master cyl.

If so the original tandem master cyl was 447 611 021 and the corresponding part from ATE 03.2125-2510.3

Check this sight out and search 447611021  (or RR equivalent if different to MB)

This looks like it? From Audi Tradition 332 euro. Usually ship pretty fast and cheap from there.

You could perhaps take it to The brake place on corner Killarney/Colombo St in Hamilton, and have them refurbish the one in your car already. That's what I did, though my cars problem wasn't binding brakes, it was leaking master cylinder. i unspderstsnd though the binding is from the master cylinder needing rebuilding.

This might be cheaper Greg:

Except freight ex-UK is ridiculous, whereas very cheap ex-Germany. Dunno why such a big difference.
But if those ones are new might be better......the Audi Tradition is used but apparently like new.

Updated:
WTF!! Just checked their shipping charges.....?144 !!!!!! That's loopy!

I might get my repair shop to check that out first before buying..thanks.

Don't know sorry. But the discussion refers to front or rear lock-up, believed being related to which part of the master cylinder is failing. Nil else of great news really in the thread than that. I'd just rock into your favourite brake place and have them reco it. $4 to $5 hundred there about including the labour. Done in an avo.

Audidude

Thanks.
That's the current plan. I'll update when done.....could be a while..

I was able to find a new-old-stock genuine master-cylinder on USA eBay. There are a lot of random rare items like that kicking around still new in the States - size of the market, and all that

Cost me about $100 NZD including postage

Was about 2 years ago, but it's probably still worth employing eBay's search engine on the USA site, by part number.  Patience might be the order of the day
