it's a long story, but it looks like I'm going to have to pull the dash out of the wagon and as the MFD is starting to get dim and unreadable in sunlight I was thinking of sorting that at the same time, does anyone in NZ (Auckland preferably) refurbish these units, or should I just buy one new?

this is the unit

thanks

Check with Hans i think he did this in his Audi

Audi's clusters are not as easy to swap. Hence most replace the screen.

In your MK4, the cluster swap is actually extremely easy.
Actually I may even have a good cluster laying around. It will require pulling coding from current cluster and transferring all info to replacement cluster with recoding keys.
Not a hard process regardless.

is the recoding best done with the cluster out of the car or through the OBD port?

Best done with cluster and everything connected in the car.
MK4 has immo information in cluster and ECU.
MK5 has all immo info in the cluster. then talks to ECU

thanks for the offer, given that I'm planning to run this car until something major blows, I'll price up a new cluster rather than risk second hand
