That's a years old article I think. Didn't Mouton roll the quattro in the event?

Actually yes you might be right...

I think there's a number of old articles on the Otago Rally website, with just the 2017 banner up. Several things in the article look to it being an old one...mention of 2008 in there, and Malcolm Stewart owning the car but having it for sale. He did sell it, and he has since passed away.

It'd be great if it's a return visit by Mouton in 2017 though, - I could be tempted into a run down country to see it happen.

I'm just having a look on the net for reference to Mouton rolling the car when doing her demo circuit, but haven't found it yet.

Added: my turn to be wrong. The only reference I can find, which I've mixed up with being her appearance in Dunedin, is she rolled an S1 quattro in the 2010 Race of Champions in Germany.

Hanu Mikkola rolled that car in RNZ in 1984, which is why the factory team sold it to Malcolm Stewart rather than take it home.

It currently resides in a museum in Oamaru, but is in full road-going condition. Owned by Allan Wills, one of Malcolm's best friends who promised to keep it in original condition. One of NZ'S automotive jewels in the crown.

Hi Greg! I saw the car in the museum in 2007, indeed it is a jewel. It would've been amazing to see it fired up and ripping round the circuit, and hopefully it'll happen again. I never saw a rally quattro in action.

I shot this picture at the opening of Highlands in 2013. I drove my ur quattro 20V from Hamilton for that event. Epic road trip including driving it over the Crown Range to Wanaka.

The other car in the picture is a genuine Zakspeed Escort.

I've viewed your footage a couple of times over the years, good stuff. Time you went made some more😉

Horch

Following the rally the car did return to ingolstadt for repair while Trevor Hudson negotiated the purchase for Malcolm. When collecting the car Malcolm enquired about purchasing spare body panels given his intention to run the car competitively. He inevitably got the opportunity to rummage through a waste skip at Audi Sport to retreave discarded Kevlar panels etc.

Speaking to Malcolm and Sue some years later, at the opening of then new Wellington dealership where the car was displayed, he was gutted that the original A2 steering wheel had been stolen from the car and a local wheel had been fitted.

Irony was I had a good colleague and now friend a Audi Ag in ingolstadt, (very interested to learn I was restoring an urquattro) who I had approached about locating a 20v 'personal' steering wheel. He had some clout and went straight to a contact at Audi Sport asking for a Audi steering wheel. What arrived was a simple momo wheel in reasonable condition that had seen some use. Although not what I was seeking the provenance of this wheel goes without saying albeit it was not accompanied by papers authenticating its history. Why would it.

So anyway I relayed the above  to Malcolm and said I would be happy to gift him the wheel just to return it to where it would be better appreciated.  He was delighted and in return said I would have to come down to his farm and experience a ride in the car. That was a bucket list tick right there!

Very sadly some time after this meeting Malcolm became ill and the exchange never eventuated. Anyway it was a nice gesture and I still have the wheel today.

Malcolm was a genuine and bloody humble top bloke and kiwi.

Great info thanks, Horch.

I first saw that car in very much unrestored condition on the first Audi corporate track day that I attended, in 1996. At that time I was told it was worth, I seem to recall, about $600,000 NZ, although I suspect there was little to back up such a claim.

It was a huge buzz to see it in original factory condition at Highlands and chat to Allan Wills in the pits, and then to see it in full song on the track.

I also saw it in fully restored condition in August 2007, I think at The Mystery Creek Motorshow in Hamilton. I'd forgotten that it was actually for sale at that time! Here are the pictures I took at the time:
