Oh right, I don?t really follow BMWs all that much so didn?t realise the 535s were that hard to find. The 550 is a really nice car and certainly no slouch either. Just if one could get the twin turbo that would probably be my choice of the two.
You can get the F10 version but the E60/E61 was never sold here. AFAIK it's a US only model.
We do get the 535d though.... Now that is an interesting beast. With a remap you're looking at an oil burner with 255kw and and a not to be sneezed at 680Nm while still returning a healthy 12l/100km around town and close to 7 on the open road
The biggest problem I would have with it.... It sounds like a tractor

My best mate has an E61 M5 Touring.

It's ludicrously awesome... even before you press the M button!

The V10 M5 is the worst M5, hence why they are so cheap. The will be a classic though for the fact they have a V10 engine. The E39 M5 and F10 M5 are way better cars/engines.

I take an E39 M5! maybe even an E34  8)

We've got a manual E39 525i, but it's certainly no M5!

The ultimate would have been an E39 M5 wagon  8)

because of the horrible gearbox? Or something else as well? I've driven the M6 a few times and found i couldn't live with the box.

I believe it's also got to do with failing rod bearings and a number of other things also.

The engine, they have all sorts of issues, then there is driving the bloody thing, its like driving a VTEC, bugger all torque. On the open road you need to drop the E60 down to 3rd to pass traffic, in the E39 you can leave it in 6th or drop it to 5th. Then these is the fuel economy, think high teens early 20's in the real world. Why would you?

Read these first before you make up your mind and buy an S4 (b6/B7).

"what happens is this: you're cruising along one day in your 2004-2009 S4, listening to electronic dance music, thinking about how cool it would be to stance a Rolls-Royce Phantom. And all of a sudden, you hear a little rattle coming from the engine. This is the sound of your timing belt wobbling around like a toddler in a McDonald's ball pit.

Now, I know what you're thinking: this doesn't seem so bad! Hoist the engine out of the car, replace a few tensioners, and a few adjusters, and maybe a timing chain or two. And then you're good for another eight years!

Well, here's the thing: there's no such thing as "not so bad" in the world of used Audi repairs. According to this excellent summary of the problem over on the Audi forums, an Audi dealer charges around eight grand to fix this issue. You want to do it yourself? No problem. The parts alone are three grand, and then you have to consider the hours you'll spend under the car, covered in grease, wondering why the hell Audi designed this vehicle so that it could only be fixed by a creature the size of a cicada. All for a car that's only worth about fifteen grand, according to average pricing on AutoTrader.com......"

I read that same article a few months ago. Seems the MK6 golf GTI suffers from the same problem. Dodgy tensioners

I personally prefer the older style engines that run the cam drive and ancillaries from the front where they can be accessed without removing the engine!

Really nice cars and excellent all around package. Easy power ups as well.

On the subject of power ups...any suggestions other than the very expensive APR option. Ideally a remap and what else? Does exhaust (cat back/delete) really make that much difference? Any experience anyone has had and would like to share would be valuable and appreciated

Send me a PM.
Happy to assist with all the request/queries above. No where near APR pricing at all either.
