I have an intermittent starting issue in a V6 Bora.

When the key is turned to start, everything goes dead (like a flat battery) but hold the key in start position and it will slowly get power and start to crank. The door looks tend to flicker whilst cranking.
Only happens sometimes, other times will start fine. Only trend I have noticed is that if the doors have been open for 5 minutes plus it will definitely act like this.
After a long drive, jump out, lock and walk away, will start fine next time.
Once started runs and drives absolutely fine.

Are your battery terminals clean and tight?

wsnownz

Yes have checked all the basics including most ground points.

the phantom

have you cleaned the fuse connections on top of the battery?

Haven't cleaned them, no, but have checked all the fuses.

Filx

I think maybe replace that engine relay.

the MK4 guru at Tristram says the fuse connections corrode unseen, so even if it's not the problem it's worth doing anyway = key word FIRE!

How about the battery itself? Maybe that's on the way out or there is some sort of charging issue? Long shot maybe but could be worth testing the cranking voltage in the poor start scenarios, or swap to a known good battery when the issue arises to see if that helps. And also possibly alternator output could be worth a look as well.

Battery is near new and 100% healthy so charging system must be good too.

In the past couple of weeks I've replaced a door lock module, cleaned a corroded door loom connector, and re-wired the boot loom. Along with other general fault finding. In that time the battery has died.

Got it tested yesterday by the AA when it wouldn't start. Had dropped a cell.
Turns out it was too small for the car. 500cca instead of 600+

New battery in and all is well, touch wood.
