Hey guys, so I'm not a car guy - but I can't resist old Golfs and the idea of a V6 hatch just grabs me... So I bought a 97 VR6 from some German Biker claiming to be a Euro Specialist... It was a problem from the outset and of course promptly died. It's been sitting in my garage for 5 or 6 months now and I can't seem to want to get rid of it... So here are the symptoms...

It wont come out of first... (auto) but the next time I start it, it does.
Then the stereo wouldnt turn off. Then it started buzzing like I'd left the lights on every time I opened the drivers door. Then I go to lock it and the windows go down instead. And then it wont start. And then it will start but idles really roughly. And on and on until it just sticks in first and I give up. It's worth mentioning that all these faults were random over a period of 3-4 weeks and between these times she would run sweet... I dunno.

I bought a vag com but dont have an xp to run it - and I wouldnt know what I was doing anyway. Have booked it in with the local VW dealership for a scan next week but their Euro Specialist jumped on the phone and diagnosed the problem while describing completely different faults (stuck in 3rd, revving really high) and told me it would cost me about 2.5k - which has me concerned that he's not really going to look cos he 'already knows what the problem is'...

I just like this car. The look, the feel, the raw aggression. I'm willing to spend more than I should as long as I come out the other end with a reliable, running VR6 - so I thought I'd throw it to the hive mind; any thoughts? (other than 'don't bother' or 'wreck it'  ;)

Cheers in advance,
Jonny

I pulled it out of the garage today and she's idling really roughly.

Thanks for your response - unfortunately I'm in sunny Blenheim. I have had an auto sparky recommended locally and your post has me wondering if I shouldn't bypass the VW dealership and go straight to him. Cheers again.

So I've finished bolting her back together this morning and taken her for a quick run around the block... and everything is running as it should. So this should rule out transmission? Obviously there is still a major issue... Anyone?
