Audidude

Short version. Quattro out for drive Monday, high pitched whine while cold, disappeared as warmed.
Battery ran flat, didn't notice the battery not charging light being on, but I'm colour blind and it's dim and was a bright sunny day.
Looks like alternator failed.
Going to remove and refurbish.
There's a new one on Ebay, $650 nzd landed plus gst/customs.

Just to be the sole contrarian, I went for replacement on the RS2 earlier this year.

Recondition it.
1. May well be rotor slip ring brushes and two bearings and you get to keep your original unit. A few hours labour.
2. Check the availability and price of an exchange part via your Audi dealer. These items are remanufactured by the Audi parts division at Kassel.

Definitely no charge reaching the battery from the alternator.

There is battery voltage on the end of the cable to the alternator at the alternator terminal - so hopefully it's not a wiring issue.

Odd thing though is that the alternator light doesn't come on when the ignition is turned on, and doesn't come on when engine running either. I had noticed it coming on intermittently the last few times I drove it though.

Alternator coming out tonight and going to auto-electrician for refurbishment. Will update later as I'm away in Oz till next Wednesday.

#11
Part number: 034903016D
Found several on Ebay searching for that number around 260-280NZD plus postage - if it can't be refurbished I can source a replacement (but may not be a Bosch, so prefer to keep original.

Did you get the same OEM part, or an equivalent from someone like Delco?

Audi do

Refurb, I would also upgrade the battery wiring.
I was working on a Cobra with 351 v8 engine and found the battery + terminal on the remote relay was getting extremely hot (so much so I couldn't touch it) so decided to upgrade it.
It now doesn't get hot and the engine spins over much faster when starting..

I checked the invoice and it doesn't say. There was a reason for not refurbishing but I can't remember what it was. Refurb should be fine in most cases.
