Note the article on the 996 homecoming!
New classic now achieving, at long last, the recognition it deserves.

Great thanks Schatters. I knew the new issue was featuring a 20th anniversary story on the 996, and the link hasn't appeared on Rennlist yet, even. Cheers for that!

The 996 "bogey" reputation is definitely fading and the true qualities of the car are now being appreciated and that is being reflected in the used market.

It's the last of the raw/light/connected 911s - not to the same extent as the 993 and earlier, but faster and better handling than those earlier cars. And at it's best on the 2WD versions.

I'm not saying the later cars aren't great driving tools, but they are heavier and modulated by electronics and more refined.
While traditional wisdom says the 997 with the round headlights looks better, there's a big body of opinion that it's bland compared to the more characterful front on the 996 (either version) - and the 997.1 has all the same engine issues of the 996s (as do that era Caymans and Boxsters), but no-one seems to bag them for that - shows you how much appearances can count for :)

The Turbo and GT3 are the cream of the crop, and have the relatively trouble free Mezger engine of course. But they are already very expensive to buy. There are good 996s available under $50,000 still, but not for much longer I'd predict.
