Just been quoted $3100 to replace my EGR and Cooler on my Touareg 3.0 TDI - around $3100!!
Ouch.
Any other options - for example - after market parts, or removing altogether and running without it?
Really don't want to have to fork out that much if I can find a good alternative.
Thanks

Sheesh! How old is your Touareg? Whos quoting you that much?

jimmyant

Its a 2011 150kW, but done 195ks.
A local European car service company in Mount Maunganui. Usually pretty good but was surprised at the quote this time.

Is it possible to delete EGR system completely and code out of ECU?

I know on the really old tech T4 diesels that's really common to do, no electronics though as a mechanical system.

Not sure if this is relevant to your car.
My quick read noted that if you have a dpf it is not suitable.

Some cars require EGR to do DPF regen as they use the EGR to increase cylinder temps.

McDoof

EGR delete would also require a DPF delete then.
A mate of mine just had this done on his 125kw Passat due to DPF failure.
Requires a new downpipe for the DPF delete, EGR blanking plate and a good tune. It will probably end up setting you back about the same amount of $$$, if not a bit more.
The good part it, you gain a fair bit of power and torque. The bad part it that you will spit out a bit of smoke under heavy acceleration. But because these engines are already pretty clean burning anyway, it's really only a little bit.

Hi 80 vert,
Is it a big job to do?

Dependent on the ASH/Soot level. They are not always recoverable at all.
However, there is a cleaning system we have done in the shop to a few and had great results.

Not really, took me a couple of hours.
Still going fine a couple thousand ks later.
Ebay Germany is the place to get a new one.
They are a COMPLETE rip off here.

Diesel particulates are known to be some of the most harmful emissions and you want to remove the DPF......
DPF was invented for a reason.
Before long laws will come along where factory fitted emissions equipment will be required for WOF... then what.

Look man you're just trying to be difficult. You can currently Cert for DPF delete and so forth. Heck you can get a warrant with coilovers and spacers without a cert, people do it all the time. The WOF system is flawed beyond belief and I think you're clutching at straws here. VW themselves cheat the system for gods sake! Maybe you're just showing your age? ;)

In other news the EGR delete and DPF delete with tune will have a huge affect on the car and its my opinion that it would be a better way to spend the cash..... no more egr issues no more dpf issues and a maybe even a 80% power increase? :-X

as you were ol chap

Not being difficult, just calling it as I see it.
I agree the WOF system is a joke much like other things we do in NZ but removing these emissions related components is just not a smart practise, maybe you don't value the life of your kids or kids you may have in future.
Many countries now have emissions testing for Diesel, DPF removal a big no no.

But as you say As you were ole chap.  ;)
