Hi team,

hoping someone on here can help - a wee while ago randomly my Mk5 2009 Golf GTI had the traction control and tire pressure lights come on at the same time.

It will go on and off intermittantly but cant be reset totally.

Took it to a local VW specialist as it hit 70kms so I got the DSG serviced.  They reckon it needs a new ABS unit (however i can feel the ABS working on heavy brakes) and have quoted me $4000 to do this.

Long story short i cant really afford the $4000 right now with other s**t going on in life.

Has anyone else had this happen?  Do I have any other options like rebuild the ABS unit or service it?

Cheers

You need to post the codes etc.

$4K seems silly money. 2009 should be MK60EC1, which are far less prone to failure than the earlier MK60.

Get a scan before hand too, so you have a record of the ABS coding, otherwise it'll be a dealer trip anyway if they don't save it first.

Hi Mate I have a 2009 Golf GTI Pirelli Edition and I have had the same issue (Car was fixed yesterday 09/01/18).
There is a Campaign 45F2 set for the cars affected to my understanding. Take your car to your local VW Dealership and ask them if they can look up your VIN to see if your vehicle is part of this Campaign/Recall.

Hope this helps. :)

This might be relevant too. I had that problem on my 05 Mini Cooper. Turned out to be speed sensor knackered.

2009 models have a well documented problem with the ABS unit giving the faults you have, several companies in the UK rebuild the units.
You can also fit the later ABS unit from a MK6 and code them accordingly.
Run as far as you can from who ever quoted 4K, thats outrageous.

Is there also a steering wheel light on?

It may simply be a damaged speed sensor, or the cable that connects to it. You can visually check this but best to scan and get a read out of the fault codes.

Where in NZ are you?

There is indeed a recall on some 09-10 models, just had one done at Giltrap today.
Check with your local dealer on recall 45F2
Esp and abs lights were on, software update seems to have fixed the problem.

Found this thread and found out about the recall, thanks everyone. There is a copy of the recall notice here - https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2016/RCRIT-16V913-6522.pdf

I had the ESP and Tire pressure warning lights come on intermittently on my GTI Pirelli. I confirmed the recall with [email protected] and took my car to Tristram VW. They couldn't apply the software update, so initially told me I would have to replace the ABD module at my cost. By the time I arrived to pick up my car they said they had spoken to VW and were hopeful VW would cover the ABS module as part of the recall, got a call the next day to confirm it was covered.

However when I picked up my car the power steering was now dead and it looks like I have to replace the steering rack, about $3500.  :'(
