Yet another tyre advice thread - MK6 GTI 225/40/18
« on: March 01, 2018, 10:17:08 am »
So the time has come, all 4 tyres need replacing. These are RE002ís and lasted about 50k kms with constant rotating and wheel alignments.

Generally been happy with them but keen to explore options. Car is not driven particularly hard these days (wifeís daily), but she does go up and down the Rimutakas almost weekly and the odd gravel road often.

Choices are:
- Bridgestone RE003 $200 each
- Neuton NT5000 $120 each
- Hankook H452 Ventus S1 $200 each
- Goodyear F1 Directional $199 each
- Nexen NFera AU5 $170 each
- Yokohama ES32 $179 each

I know PS4ís get mentioned a lot but I canít get them for less than $280 each from Auckland + shipping, firting and balancing so have excluded that.

Thoughts on those other choices? i think i may just go RE003ís as they are tried and tested.

Cheers

I've driven on the Eagle F1 D5, Neuton NT5000 and the Bridgestone RE003
The Neuton is the worst of those, harsh ride and less grip. Sold them on TM and then bought the Good years.
I put 30k on my Eagle F1s on my AWD legacy and they still had a heap of tread left, as in more than half.
RE003 feels a bit softer than the other 2 and less road noise when they are new. And they look nice. I can't comment on longevity though.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Hyper, Beaurepaires and Bridgestone all have 4 tyres for 3 at the moment. Leaning towards the RE003ís easy as, although have heard as well that they are softer so likely to have less life.

I've had the nt5000, re002, and re003 on my mk2 golf.

Thoughts nt5000 are fine in the dry but scary in the wet. I would not put them on my wife's car ever.

Re002 was a great allrounder for the money lots of grip in all conditions. They wore pretty quickly.

Re003 feels like the 002 but maybe slightly more alround grip. (Could just be because they are new)
Can't comment on wear as they are only a month old but you got 50k out of 002 so I don't think wear is an issue for you.

I could only ever recommend Pilot Sport 3 or Pilot Sport 4 as those are what I've used, I have not had a chance to try the others

real tyres for the price of cheap no-names, that's a win.

await your verdict on the re003s.

That seems a darn good price!
Was going to suggest making a list of the properties you do, and do not, want the tyres to have - maybe next time  8)
These are my thoughts and opinions - sometimes I'm wrong, but not often ;-)

I've been running Nexan Nfera SU1 on the TT and also our Fuga 450GT, found them to be a great all rounder, quiet, good wrar, reasonable wet and dry grip, good handling. Had the TT out on the Raglan back roads for some spirited driving and the tyres out performed the limits of the suspension (Eibach Coilovers).
