Hi all.
Have a Mk5 2008 NZ new golf.  1.4ltr fsi. Just today got a really bad rattling noise out of engine. Sounds like coming from bottoms crank pulley but hard to tell being so tight to get in there. To me almost sounds like timing chain. Could this just happen all of a sudden? Anyone experienced this before?

Yes, stop driving it immediately.  If it skips teeth you will have bent valaves and / or piston damage.
Best to have chain and tensioner replaced.

Ok thanks.  It hasn?t lost any power as such. So it is likely that tension has let go and now it could skip a link?

Anyone recommend who to take car to? Based on north shore. Is there alternate companies from the actual dealerships?

German Automotive. Stop driving it as it can skip teeth and bend all your valves.

Ok established today it isn?t the timing chain. Theww! Got under car and ran engine.  Sound is coming from water pump pulley. Nice and noisey. Sprayed some crc onto and around pulley and noise stops.  Comes back after a minute or so when crc wears off.

Grape

And the answer is water pump has gone. Makes one hell of a rattle when it is in bad shape. New water pump coming right up.

Good outcome!

... but be very wary of the chain, they don't last well... and, ideally, run it on 98 to try to avoid the melting piston issue too.

Grape

Yes better outcome than having to do timing chain but super charger water pumps aren?t cheap either.  ;D

Common issue on these for waterpump to fail causing that noise, even mk6 ones go sub 100kms
