S-tronic/DSG repairs

It looks like there is a few more of these sort of places springing up lately. They are able to repair and recondition mechatronic units at a fraction of the price of new from the dealer. 2-5 day turnaround. use fedex or dhl express. http://www.ecutesting.com/vw_and_audi_dsg_gearbox_ecu.html

Perhaps we might see similar companies in NZ/Australia soon. About time repairing this technology became more affordable.

Just sharing my experience in recently replacing the Mechatronic (DSG ECU) unit in my 3.2 2004 Audi TT Mk1.

I had all the classic symptoms and the following error codes which pointed to a failure of the unit. The worst was it getting stuck in neutral sometimes.
(Big lesson here: check the error codes BEFORE purchasing an Audi!)

18232 - Pressure Control Valve 3 (N217)

After reading a lot of forums and chatting to NZ mechanics I opted to buy a brand new unit to avoid the risk of a repair not being as reliable, and if there were any issues it's about $100 each way in freight to England, to one of the repair shops.

I ending up sourcing a brand new one from Denmark from www.autostarter.dk

I sent all the exact info of my model TT and they correct unit was ordered and programmed up.

It cost me 9,150.00 DKK (about NZD$2080) including sea freight, which took about 5 weeks to get delivered. George Sas was very helpful and quick to respond to my questions.

The install was done by Burger motors www.burgersmotorworks.co.nz in Glenfield, Auckland, for about $900 including oil.

So all up about $3K to repair - lucky I got a reasonably good deal when I bought the car.

The car now works amazing as the gear changes are impressive. I probably saved about $1K by purchasing from Denmark.

Hope this helps anyone else that suffers from this known problem.

Sounds like a good deal. I had a similar situation on my '04 A3 3.2 but opted for the repair route which was to disassemble mechatronic and install new clutch control solenoids. I wasn't getting the PRNDS flashing which is common but had very jerky takeoff and shifting in R, 1 and 3. Ended up paying $1300 all-in at Hutt Automatics in Wellington and DSG was good as new. That was 14,000km ago and still going strong (touch wood)

Advice Please.
I?m very, very close to closing a deal on an 04 TT 3.2 Quattro and have run across this common fault thread regarding the DSG Mechtronic controller. How can I ensure this is not a problem or do they all fail?  Would scanning codes at dealership show if it was good or bad?

Car was imported3 years ago with 34k on clock 3 years ago and has been maintained by Audi dealership (Archibalds) since then. Sitting on 53k now and his in pristine condition. I would do the fluid filter changes on DSG and Haldex once I get anyway. Is this enough to ward off the Mechatronic failure?

Spoke with the dealership that looked after the maintenance on this Mk1. They stated that everything is up to date but DSG does not require a service until 60k. I've got assurance from the dealer that all is fine and he will cover any major mechanical breakdowns for the first 6 months. At that time I'll be close to the 60k and will get full fluid & filter change completed. Hopefully all is good.

Are you sure its DSG? Might be a normal tiptronic auto?

Even if it is DSG, 14 years and no record of DSG service being done is enough to scare me off it.

The 3.2 was 2003 on-wards were they not all DSG equipped ? perhaps the earlier 1998 mk1s. The service interval for DSG fluid is 60,000kms for first service, so hes bang on in time for that, not sure heat degradation and time is such an issue with that fluid.

Either way though, id highly consider a Autosure extreme warranty to cover Mechatronic failure. I renewed my direct with Audi $1800 for 3 years.

I've weighed up the options on buying a mechanical warranty and decided against it. Having a qualified Audi dealer work on the car for services isn't practical where I reside. We do have an auto trans specialist nearby who is familiar with the DSG & Haldex systems.  After I drive car for approx. 6 months I'll book it in with him to go through everything and complete the essential maintenance. We don't do big mileage and have plenty of spare cars to use should one be down for an unspecified time period.

Looked into European sites for parts etc along with NZ repair of components like the Mechatronic.  Prices have dropped and parts seem to be more readily available. There are also a number of cars being wreaked that may have decent used spares available.

Time will tell if this is the right choice or not. When my wife picks it up she will be aware of anything not operating correctly and be in a position to bring to Audi at the Dealers cost. I also have in writing the Dealer will repair any serious faults if car is 'not fit for purpose' for a period of 6 months.

Youll be fine, those kms are pretty low, my Mk2 has nearly 140,000 kms on it and the only issues it had in 2 years ownership were

- electric window cable (common)
- ignition barrel (common)

Other than that all regular maintenance (brake pads, oil changes etc).

Surprisingly compared to Japanese cars, never had to any suspension components like tie rods, ball joints, bushes etc, jap cars seem to always have issues with those at high ks.
