I had a 2004 A3 3.2 and it said 95/98 inside the petrol flap. So I did that

The 3.2 VR6 is fitted to the A3 3.2 - same as the R32 Golf. They run quite high compression.

VW recommends 98, but 95 is OK (with reduced output).

They like 98. It'll run on 95.

I could hear mine pinking, while it adjusted down to 95, retarding the timing and reducing torque at low revs.

The economy seems worse too.

I doubt it'll much like 91 at all - it'll probably have to retard the timing so much, that the economy will suffer badly, cost more than 95 would with it's improved economy.
