Hi guys,

Just recently brought a 2010 Mk6 Golf R and obviously love it but have run into my first problem. My aircon has stopped working and my usual mechanic has priced it at $3500 to fix.... almost a quarter of what i paid for the car. Anyway have any of you had similar problems or know what part number i might need to sort a part myself as the mechanic wont budge or give me the part number i need?

Cheers Matt

When you say it has stopped working? No fans? blows warm air? Makes funny noises?
I'd start with going to an automotive AC specialist and get them do you a quote. Your mechanic might be giving you the FO price because he doesn't want to do the job.

Its the control valve in the compressor, available separately - dont buy a new compressor.
While you are at it change mechanics.

Yep - PLENTY of places only replace the compressor (including VW!) when its the control valve that's jammed - It only costs  a couple of hundred to replace ( guestimate - I think the valve was something not much over $100? and a degass and regas to swap it - take about 10 mins to swap). I only had to pay for the valve, coz mates .

They have variable displacement compressors with no clutch, and the valve controls the swashplate angle and ,therefore, the compressor output. I had to do both my Tourans. They would intermittantly cool, or sometimes feel like they were heating! It was all over the place, but generally poor cooling.

Compressors can disintegrate, but they tend to dump crap into the system, and it gets VERY expensive to fix then!

Oh sweet thank you! Have had another quote now and he has said $660 for a new compressor if it?s needed just need to get the serial number.

Hi there, I have a 2012 GTi ed35 (similar engine) and it has 82,000km on it. The aircon is quite noisy but still works, I have heard/read accounts of VW aircon being problematic. Does noisy operation point to potential problems of the type discussed here or would this point to pulleys or bearings etc?

schattenblau

the a/c also died on my mk5 gti...
compressor, dryer, tx valve, high pressure switch etc. all replaced

:(

assuming the mk6 r uses the same parts i can scan my old invoice, it has all parts numbers and prices.

First Off the compressors do fail. The valve also fail but it is common for the compressor to let go and fill the system with metal filings. This is what
schattenblau will have had.
Have the system degased and pull the control valve out. It has I mesh gauze on I,t see if there are and little metal bit on it. if you do you need the works. If not new valve and regas.
