Hi,

Just today the car started to have difficulty starting, takes a few rough cranks before the engine will start. It seems to drive fine afterwards but it's throwing engine check light.

Possibly something to do with fuel delivery side of things?

probably timing chain as mentioned.

however it's possible it could just have been a really, really flat battery as well?
A little difficult to diagnose with limited information.

Timing chain slipped due to failed tensioner. Hope you've stopped trying to start it.
DO NOT CRANK OVER till you've checked timing and checked tensioner or replaced however good chance damage done already.

Suggests the chain HAS slipped - it can be catasrophic and needs to be trucked to a tech who knows what they are doing. If it's not already damaged, just trying to start it again could be enough to cause a lot more damage.

Sad news, but don't try to start it again is the best advice!

Another MK6 GTI. VW should be really be replacing these faulty tensioners under warranty or factory recall. It should't be acceptable

Car is 10 years old done over 100km. As far as any manufacturer goes it's day is done.
This fault also constantly gets mentioned yet most people ignore till too late.
Our car had done 29k when I first read about it. Changed them a week later.

Ok, so from what the service rep tried to convey to me, it was not the tension but the camshaft bridge.

80 Vert

That makes no sense. Did they replace the chain and tensioner? If not then insist they do!
