Mk6 timing chain tensioner
« on: March 03, 2019, 10:30:07 pm »
Hi there, got a 2010 gti mk6 and got fairly paranoid over the problematic timing chain that it may have. All is good for now but would like to do some preventive maintenance before I go ahead with a tune etc. Could someone recommend me a mechanic who can get this looked at for me and approximately how much this would cost. Thanks in advance appreciate any help provided :)

Another one, you are justified in being paranoid. Just doing one now.

In Auckland but correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't just the timing chain tensioner replacement be sufficient and not a complete timing chain replacement?

No, the chain is also prone to stretch and has been re designed. Always replace both.

Is that what you charge for the job? Pretty reasonable considering the alternative.

Dealer told me standrad procedure was to replace the chains, tensioner and pulleys

A cause for concern if they can't get the quote right.

Hi, I'm also new on here as I have just bought a Mk6 GTI.

I had it in my mind after reading various sites that it was a 'must do' for the mk6.

But I was told by VW in Tauranga that the tensioners were not an issue that I should worry about and a good local Euro mechanic here who is a 'VW guy' says the same thing.

I'm not sure what to think now. I really don't want to wreck a motor but also don't want to spend upwards of $1500 if it's not needed.

Has anyone on here actually had the tensioner on their car fail?

You'll find Vert will have seen a fair few motors that have blown up because of this issue.
In the USA there is a class action against VW that has been won. So the issue 100% exists. Choose to ignore it at your own risk.

Thanks for the reply. I feel like I will get it done.

Just one other question for anyone who may know. Is there a way to tell if it's already been done?

Because I have the service history from Japan (been services 4 times there) but it's pretty vague.

Anything to look for? Parts numbers of newer tensioner models?

99% sure it won't have. There is an inspection plug to see the tensioner so yes it's possible to check.
PM me if you need the job done, have done lots and have also seen plenty of broken engines as a result of failed chains / tensioners.
I cannot understand dealers telling people it's not an issue. Not their problem I guess if your engine goes boom.
100% cause for concern!!

Yes, mine failed on my 2010 MK6 GTI.

It was covered by the warranty at the time, thankfully. Strongly recommend you get it done.
