Hi all,

I?m new here and I apologise if this has already been asked. Have been trying to google the answer but not getting anywhere...

I?m looking to buy a 2011 S3 and want to know if it is belt or chain driven or both. The dealer can?t tell me for certain but seems to think it?s chain driven, I need to know for sure..

Any help appreciated 👍

The 2011 S3 used the EA113 engine that is both a cambelt and a cam chain. The cambelt and water pump should be replaced together at 40k miles. I can?t remember the mileage for the cam chain but if you?re unsure then get it replaced. Please only use genuine parts. Also, if you haven?t changed already - change the cam bucket (cam follower). These wear through and cause considerable damage.

Belt driven from crank to cam and chain driven between both cams as far as i understand. I DIY replaced my 2009 S3's belt a while ago. Not too bad a job if you have the correct tools and garage space.
