car surges and decelerates at sporadic times, got car scanned and it come up with error regarding high pressure fuel pump

European dealer scanned car and said to replace fuel pump (3 port) at a cost of $2540.00. is this sort of price common? should I try and look at something else (cam follower) first

your advice would be appreciated

Worth trying the cam follower first, its a $60 part and 40 minutes work. It will also allow you to check the cam lobes that the HPFP work against to see if they are damaged (i know some older mk5 gti's had a one part non-hardened cam lobe which could get ruined).

Other things to check, fuel filter not clogged and starving the pump.

HPFP Low side sensor (the one on the side, not the regulating valve on the top).

Probably a few guys here have some other ideas of what to have a look at.
