Read many threads on many sites some saying ABS Pump Bleed is required if air has got into it, others stating it isn't required.  Anyone know for sure?

Also anyone have a definitive VCDS procedure for doing it?

I've only needed to use vcds for it once.
I put an air fitting in an old reservoir cap and put 5-7 psi air pressure  on which completely eliminates pumping the pedal.

as per the above, to set the pressure.
I just used one of these with an Aliexpress pressure gauge to bleed my last car. Cheap and easy

My "Brake bleeder" was only $7 at savebarn

I ran the pressure higher, and also the VCDS function on my MK60 unit, but it had been disconnected from the car a while. I didn't go as high as VW recommends with pressure for the MK5 though.

I don't think they bleed function helped the feel at all, so was probably completely un-needed.

There are some places in the ABS that air can hide... but it's not likely to have air in it if it's been on a car already.

Totally dry pumps may have some air between valves and fluid paths that aren't usually open and may require the procedure to totally remove it. A used pump should still have it's old fluid in these areas which will soon escape with some "spirited" driving/braking  >:D

Any thoughts on what symptoms would point to needing to specifically bleed ABS pump?

Squishy pedal. Can be air in MC as well, MC has / should have bleed nipples on it also.
