Hi

As much as I love my MK5 GTI, I find the dials a bit hard to read in bright sun - they are well recessed and appear quite dark. I was thinking of getting a GPS speedo with HUD so I can have the speed showing on the inside of the windscreen, meaning I don't have to take my eyes off the road for so long to read the speed. I thought the one at SuperCheap
(https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/sca-sca-gps-head-up-display/525173.html)
looked quite good, until I read the reviews - many reviewers commented on how the unit overstated the actual road speed. The GTI speedo is already about 8-10% fast, so I'd like an accurate GPS reading.

Has anyone installed a GPS speedo with HUD that is reasonably accurate?

Cheers

An Android tablet with Google maps?
Maybe not exactly what you are after, but works pretty well.

tablet over hud with any number of performance apps.

they all provide gps speed data.

i found my mk5's gauges perfectly legible.

they got everything right on that model, newer ones got fancier with messier clock graphics etc.

Strange on the legibility as I have no issues with mine. I also have a speed warning set for open roads just in case ;D Would be cool if multiple speed warnings can be set with increasing number of warning sounds (one, two, three).

Anyway, never installed one of these, and based on the overall rating, I'd probably give it a skip. I'd personally go performance app on my mobile phone.

Hi again

I just thought I'd record here what I did in case someone else finds it useful. I was thinking of buying an Excelvan HUD X5, but ruled that out when I realised that I wear Polaroid sunglasses, and they would filter out any image reflected off the inside of the screen. Tested this by putting my cellphone face up on the dash so I could see its screen reflected in the windscreen, and as soon as I put my sunglasses on, the reflection of the phone disappeared.

After looking around, I bought a VJoyCar T812 from Amazon (NZ$100 incl post & GST). It has 2 modes: GPS or OBD2. I've connected it to the OBD2 socket, but sadly it says the Golf's data is incompatible, so I'm using it in GPS mode. I've adjusted the speed readout to match my GPS unit, as it was a bit optimistic, and it works really well. It's easy to read and responds quickly to speed changes, and locks onto the GPS signal really quickly after start-up. Apart from a couple of times when the displayed speed has gone a bit random for a few seconds, it has been reliable for the last month.

I mounted it on a small hinge which I stuck onto a small square of aluminium, which is then velcroed to the dash - so I can remove it easily, and tip the screen down a bit to remove reflections. I've tried to attach a couple of pics which show what I've done, but apparently "the upload folder is full", and I can't upload the pics.

Cheers

Here's some pics that show what the display looks like, and how it's mounted. Let me know if you need more info.

nice, how high does the speedo read to ?

:D

Thanks. I don't know what the max display speed is. I know I've seen 141km (and so did my wife!) passing a truck. Here's a link to the Amazon page:
https://www.amazon.com/VJOYCAR-Universal-Speedometer-Odometer-Automotive/dp/B07QT741LV

and the company website:
http://www.vjoycar.com/Car-GPS-Speedometer/GPS-Speedometer-T800.html

It's a TFT screen, so I presume it will display up to 999? The ads show 189.
