Hi im back again and decided to start a new thread

If u havent read my last post i have a tiptronic 04 mk4 gti with the (apparently) common solenoid failure. Ive contacted the nice guys at kaspa and they said if a atf flush doesnt fix it a solenoid change will be upwards of $1000 and a solenoid set change will be around $2500, worst yet a trans re build will be a whopping $4000 (worth more than the car in a decent shape. At this point im considering a manual swap, my question is how much would this approximately cost (assuming i found a donor car) i would love to do it myself and learn along the way but sadly i dont have the space nor tools (and when quarantine is over, no time aswel) so a recommended shop in Auckland that can do this would also help.

Oh and i also heard a TDI manual trans has better ratios, is that true?

my MK4 2.0 wagon has had a beetle 5 speed box swapped in by Platinum

possibly your best approach is to contact member 80 vert, who has performed magic on a variety of VWs

How much did it cost, and also what extra prts did u have to get since its a beetle. I found a mate that has the space and tools and might be doing it with him

From memory you will need.......

Gearbox
Clutch
Flywheel
Shifter box and shifter cables
Clutch line
Clutch pedal
Clutch master cylinder
Clutch switch
Interior trim for the shifter and shift knob
You may also need a manual trans driveshaft, I can't remember if an auto trans one is the same length or not, check on that. Also check the brake master cylinder reservoir has an outlet to the clutch MC.
You will also need to wire in a reverse light switch and clutch switch.
You will also need to deal with the ECU. I can't remember if you can code it to manual in the soft coding or you need to bridge some wires to tell it is in neutral. There should be info on the net on that stuff as well.

the swap was performed by the first NZ owner who was a mechanic at Platinum so had access to their parts stock, that would have been in 2007 as I think the car came in with a busted autobox
