Golf tsi 1.4 supercharged

I have got a 2010 golf tsi which has done 115000 ks.
Earlier on in January 2020 it suddenly died on me.
I took it to my local mechanic who said it needed a new starter Which costs around $500 but to replace it would cost around $2000 as to replace it we need to take out the transmission.
After the replacement the motor started but it was making a cranking noise so the mechanic repaired all the spark plugs as he said they are all gone black.
So after doing it the motor was still making noise so now it needs the timing pulley but je can’t get a pulley so he needs to buy the whole kit.
So to replace it he again need to pull the transmission apart.
Mechanic says the total cost is looking at $6500.
Moreover it ‘s transmission is due for a recall at VW .
It it worth to get it fixed.
Please help.

Those engines are complete dogs. I'd be ditching it now.

Also sounds like the mechanic has no idea what's wrong. I doubt the starter motor needed replacing..

Wait, remove transmission to replace the starter?
Never heard of that before. Best you find a new mechanic I think.
Something is not right there.

I'm with Vert and Trofeo on this one. You need to find a proper mechanic.

I've replaced starters on a range of vehicles and while they're all pose unique access issues, and require a bit of dexterity and patience. But none can't be done with motor and transmission in situ. I've just reviewed the manual for the Mk6 1.4 and the process is similar between the manual, auto and DSG. All tools required are going to be found in any reputable workshop too.

Yes you need a new mechanic. You can change those starters in a hour. pull the air box out and its right there.

How much will it cost to replace timing belt on golf tsi 2010.
Been quoted $4000 plus by ebbet & nearly same by other mechanics in Taupo.

1400cc or 2000cc?
They don't have belts for a start. I did a complete timing chain job last week with everything new $1500
