Author Topic: A4 B5 NZ Le Mans or Quattro Sport or same same?? SOLVED (Read 2216 times)

Hey Audi lovers! I have recently joined your world with a purchase of a A4 B5 1.8TQ Sedan. Basically because I wanted a car that has classic potential that I could look after for another 10 years or so...keep stock or upgrade, idk yet!!

So found an immaculate B5 with same owner for last 12 years and am going about replacing the odd failing part and learning what I can.

It's a 2000 A4 Quattro with an AJL engine...After a spin around the world wide web and here, I have a few questions....

1. Is this a NZ Le Mans kit the same as the Quattro Sports model?
2. Being an AJL is there much room for a tune?
3. Best upgrade path?

Has the sports steering wheel, aluminium trim inside, white gauges, spoiler, 17" 10 spoke wheels, half leather seats....the cosmetic stuff i can see that are the same as the Le Mans kit.

Any advice or links much appreciated

Hi rayray, The 2000 AJL models are not Le Mans spec from what I've seen. The Le Mans spec cars seem to be just year 2001, basically the very last of the B5 models produced. Spec sheet below. I'm not exactly sure where 2000 AJL cars sit. There was a quattro sports model released in the UK/Europe that was similar spec to the Le Mans and had the bolero 17" wheels like the Le Mans cars. The MTM upgrade on the Le Mans cars here in NZ was as Audi add-on. Audi NZ offered MTM upgrades from the mid-90s through to the early 2000's. Not any more!

As far as your question on tuning AJL goes, I don't think there is any additional head room over other B5 1.8Ts. The car can safely make around 210bhp with a full exhaust and supporting ECU tune. If done right it would be a nice enhancement to an already good car.

Seems it got many of the options, do you know if there is anyway to find if it has the MTM tune?

Also by chance can you recommend anywhere in Auckland for exhaust and tune?

Vask member Hennie has a tuning shop in Auckland (see below). If you have an MTM tune I’m guessing there will be a sticker on the ECU casing or on the chip itself.

Welcome RayRay.

AJL engine is itself very responsive to tuning - however like all 1.8Ts the weak points are the rods, but that is at power levels at or around the 300hp mark. The tiny K03 turbo is also a limitation.

The other to be aware of is it is the older Bosch ECU and a drive by cable - they aren't as broadly tuneable as the later 1.8T ME7x ECUs that had wideband 2 senors and drive be cable. Swapping over to the wideband parts (using something like a donor B5.5 Passat loom, ECU, electronic throttle pedal etc) is a bit of work but worthwhile depending how far you want to go with the car in future.

Then a mildly upgraded turbo of some sort (lots of options), some of the new style Bosch 550cc injectors and a tune and aim for that 300hp and good linear torque and it'd go really well. You're also not taxing the old 5 speed gearbox too much at that level.

Beyond that it's really into changing rods, bigger turbo, etc etc and maybe looking at an 01E 6 speed conversion and all the other supporting stuff and the costs start ramping up quickly.

Don’t think I’ll go as far as opening the engine and the loom sounds tricky. Probably just bolts ons , famous last words haha. Amazing the power these 1.8s can get.

So here’s what I’m thinking

Step 1 - new flywheel/clutch - original at its end
Step 2 - coils/sparks, exhaust, tune
Step 3 - suspension (original still feels great, but is 20 yrs old)
Step 4 - brakes upgrade
Step 5 - turbo upgrade

Does this sound ok for the stock engine and anything else I should do?

Is a K04 mild??

I have edited my post above as I noticed a couple of minor errors.

K04 or similar hybrid is "mild" I guess - they're a good option for basic bolt on upgrades that spool up quickly, deliver good response and flow enough to get up around 250-300hp range. While that doesn't sound like much power with B5s being reasonably light by modern standards it would be a really fun car for relatively low investment.

. Just got car back from shop today, amazing what a new tie rod does for handling haha

I'm determined to find poof that I have a Le Mans edition, found a 10 year old post from 'the' le mans of PR codes of his Le Mans (and then lost the link!) anyway I found some differences so I guess I don't have a Le Mans $:-\$

No not at all, I noticed it advertised recently. You snapped it up quick! It's possible your car is Le Mans spec looking at it. It appears the same spec as the TQ Sport sold in UK/Europe. I suspect the only upgrade Audi did to that for the Le Mans spec was the MTM remap. Not a bad thing. Good to have a clean sheet if you want to upgrade the performance further.

yeah, i was looking at the silver b5 with 54K on the clock then it sold when I was going to view, so found this one and didn't muck around! Seems well looked after, just did a few maintenance things and waiting for a new clutch/flywheel to arrive from the states. I suspect that is why it was sold by the 12yr owner...needs a cam belt in the next 10ks as well.

I agree, not the le mans release and not an official sports but with similar specs, think I'll call it a 1.8QTS as it basically is

Pretty sure it is a TQS yes. Bolero wheels, white instrument panel, half leather seats. I’d say that’s exactly what it is.
