The low side is just under 50 and I suspect the compressor is out.

I believe there's only law on buying/recharging refrigerant?
Do I just go to an a\c shop to ask them to suck out all the refrigerant(just to save the earth) and replace the pump (and maybe the dryer as well??)?

Thanks

Depending on km it's most likely the valve in the compressor.

I don't think they only sell the valve but the whole compressor?

Valves are only available aftermarket, not genuine.

Both our 2006 Tourans required the valves doing; My NZ New one at 115K, wifes import at 170K. no other problems since fitting the RKX valves. I'm sure they're available other places too.

VW only sell the compressor, and have ripped people for plenty of them too! The valve in the most common failure in the MK5 platform.

Pristle

Not just the MkV. Different valve in the Mk3 (harder to get to), but common point of failure in them too.

How did you pin-point the problem individually?

Wow. Thanks for the link, I'll have a look over the weekend from the underside... Hopefully it's easy to identify the correct part.

In a lot of cases AC is a bit of a mystery meaning lots of people get sold things they do not need.
Did another recently, degas, new valve and re gas. ack to cold AC.
Look at the label on the compressor for the model number.

Do you do the degas and regas yourself John?
Are there any laws in NZ about a DIYer doing it?

No, I have a AC guy I trust not to rip me off. He does the de gas / re gas for me.
Don't believe there is anyone stopping you if you have the equipment.

Dealer sorted it

Compressor totally shot, impellor was wobbling around in the housing like a drunk on Friday night.

After recharging the system still no cool breeze, found the high pressure switch had also crap itself.

There are laws on the gas. You are suppose to have a handling certificate to buy refrigerant. Yet they sell those stupid top up bottles at repco to people who don't know what they are doing. Its quite a complex system that can be wrecked by over charging so i wouldn't recommend people diy it.
Plus you need about $4000 worth of gear just to degas, vac down and recharge so that will stop most people

Ordered the valve for the Zexel pump. Hopefully it's a easy change (broken the connector release tab over the weekend :-[)

Don't remove anything until the system is De gassed.

Ive just had it done by professionals. Cost around $700, degas, regas parts and fitting.

Finally got it done last weekend.

As you all suggested, after replacing the valve, it's now cold and dry.
