So in the interim i've dynamatted both sides of my parcel shelf and quite liking the stock B&O subwoofer. Id say another 15% more bass volume and 10hz deeper without distortion would perfectly balance the stock system.

Ive got a LCi2 line out convertor already, and have narrowed the sub options down to the following in price order

Rockford Fosgate P300-8T https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=2991815194
Rockford Fosgate P300-10T https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=2990607794
Kicker TRPT-102 plus a Class D amp of 300 RMS https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-stereos/subwoofers/10-or-smaller/listing-2988702582.htm?rsqid=28e2318d8b234ec680ceaf06b3ef8e64-001

i'm leaning towards Rockford Fosgate P300-8T, given the bump over factory specs im seeking will most likely be filled by this and a 10" may just be too much ?

a 10" may be better suited due to the volume of the interior of your A5/S5/RS5.
it will sounds entirely different from your existing B&O subwoofer. I would probably advise that the stock B&O would be better than the 8" being considered.

Yes the B&O does actually sound pretty good once shelf is Dynamated, I do wonder why it gets ragged on so much, I'm not a bass head by any stretch and prefer balanced sound, but just feel it could be 10-15% better (bit more volume handling and a bit deeper in the freq response, to really finish off the system properly.

As you do mention though  a 10" rocking in the boot vs the B&O in the shelf will change the sound and thus balance of the system, possibly in a negative way.

Perhaps I should try a 15mm MDF panel on underside of the shelf, and that may just give the extra rigidity needed (more than Dynamat could offer) to get a more solid sound.

Or just consider the 4.2 V8 as the other half of the sound equation :)
