Hi all.
My GTI?s ignition has failed. When you turn the key to the start position it doesn?t even try to crank the engine over. I had this happen a couple times over the last couple months but after turning the key back and forth a couple times it started right up. Unfortunately I neglected to investigate it and then in the weekend it failed completely.
It?s a manual transmission so it was no problem bump starting it and I did that a few more times that day as I was out visiting people. The car drives fine otherwise.
I?ve got VCDS and scanned it when home and came up with 5 faults all related to the ignition. (I?ve saved a copy of the faults but they are on my laptop at home and I?m sending this while at work so if need be I can post them later).
Anyway, after a bit of searching I thought that the problem was the ignition switch at the opposite end of the barrel to the key. I ordered the part (which was the lastest revision) from VW and installed it on Monday evening. The switch also came with a small wiring loom which goes from the ignition switch to the steering wheel module and then to somewhere else in the steering wheel column that I couldn?t quite see. However, the plug to go to the steering wheel module was different and wouldn?t fit so I just used my existing loom and only replaced the ignition switch itself. Suffice to say my car it?s still not starting.
I?ve tried switching around some of the relays that are supposedly on the ignition circuit but that?s not helped either.
Any ideas on where to go from here or what I?ve done wrong?
Cheers....

Starter motor would've been my first option.

Although I am aware of switches going. I installed a push button switch on my old Audi 80.

Start motor and relay on my old Mk3. Two separate, but probably related, occasions.

And starter motor it was!
Removed it from the car and connected it directly to the battery bypassing the solenoid. It fired up the first time but not a second time.
Disassembled it to find that 3 of the 4 brushes were worn almost completely away and one of those had broken away from its wire.
So, options are new starter motor from VW (unlikely) new aftermarket starter motor from Repco etc, used starter from a wreckers or try Pick-a-part etc and take my chances or best option, get new set of brushes with the attached ring assembly thing. Does anyone know of somewhere that specialises in such things? I have cleaned up where the brushes run on a lathe in the hope of finding some.
Cheers for the advice so far.

Cheers John, but I?ve managed to find as-parts.co.nz who have the Bosch brush and holder in stock. Should have it tomorrow
