How do you remove window seals on a MK3?

In my attempt to save my 16V from the junkyard I've embarked on some rust repairs around my rear door windows.

I'm not sure how to get the rubber seals around the window off without breaking anything. Rust is under the seals so I need it off.
Does anyone have experience?
