A3 8L ABS issue

I have a 97 A3 with an ABS issue (light on all the time). I picked up the car as a spare with another I purchased, so don't know the history behind the fault. I have the lite unregistered version of VCDS which returns no response for the ABS controller. Before I go about removing and either repairing or replacing the controller, I was hoping to do some basic troubleshooting to rule out the obvious like fuse, relay or cable faults. I am having trouble finding wiring diagrams, or pin outs for the ABS controller plug. There is also mention of a relay, but I'm really not sure where to look to find this?
