Mk2 Golf keeping it original?!
« on: February 27, 2022, 08:34:13 am »
Hey guys, I have an Ď89 mk2 golf CLI with RV engine. I love the car but visually itís not as beautiful as a big bumper GTI and I was curious as to whether it was worth it to start modding it to make it the way I want. The car is all original besides the speakers and stereo, but I still have the stereo put away if anyone wanted to replace it. Itís in pretty good condition but I was curious as to whether people would care if a CLI was modded or not and whether itíd keep its value if I did change visual aspects of it.

What are your opinions? Do I keep the car all original?

Pretty hard to crystal ball any value increase or drop. But its your car so do what you want. If you're only doing the outside for looks, then I would say go all the way, no half measures. No one can see under the bonnet when you're cruising.

If you have been thinking about modifying and as you saying making it your own, I say do it. You may preserve it for the next 5-10 years only for its next owner to slam it into the ground on cheap coilovers and replica rims with stretched tyres. You'll also look at it over the next 5-10 years everyday thinking about ideas on how to make it yours but the fact you want to preserve it would eat you up inside.

I don't think a CLI will ever have a massive value so I say modify away and make it your own.
Even if it were a GTI it wouldn't stop me cutting it up, wait I did that already.

My ideal mk2 would have :-
TSR 1.9 16V
Rallye Interior
Big and small bumpers as theyíre so easy to change.
Quad lights up front
Hella half smoked tails
Definitely keep the black rub strips. Itís so 80s!

Colour hmmm, maybe Atlas grey metallic  or Montana green metallic
Wheels: Momo Quasar or BBS RS ( overplayed but still period )

Start with an original GTI if you can. Itíll hold value better.

Mk2s are in a weird place at the moment, 3 doors are ripping up in value, Jettas and 4 doors seem stagnant however I imagine they will go up eventually. I could be wrong, they might end up like Morris Minors, unwanted classics except for weirdos like us.

I'm wary to say they'll never go up, I thought the same about MX5s because they were often laughed at in the Japanese car world, and now mine is valued at an absolutely stupid price.

Overall I reckon modify it how you want, leave the ultra clean stockers to the GTI's / special edition stuff. Just about everything you do to the car can be reversed anyway if by chance our old German metal suddenly becomes super desirable.

What makes you happy? Keeping it all original and untouched or making it your own?
Does affecting a potential future value keep you up at night?

I say go for it, make it yours, make it the car you want to own and keep.

I put 18s on an urquattro (and upset the internet) :D
And installed a subwoofer.

Both of which are easily reversible with the original parts I kept. But both make me grin.
