He is selling it like an Audi ... beaut interior, nice body, etc

It depends on the owner has maintained the car. The cooling system is something to keep an eye on.

Having had a few (older) BMWs in the family (including a manual 2001 525i E39), I'd say the maintenance is way cheaper than VW/Audi - Honestly some of the VAG parts are horrendously expensive for how crappy some are!

Like all Euros, you have to pick your models - the 523i is a pretty solid car in general terms, but it's sluggish as an auto... but a reasonable cruiser. At that age, it's going to be showing some pretty serious age related wear, unless its been a garage queen with a meticulous owner...
