Radar Recommendations

(1/1)

Thermoman:
Hey Guys and Girls,

My last radar detector got stolen from my ute, window smashed.

I've been putting off getting a new one.

It's now something id like to look back into, but want some honest opinions from members who have them.

So please let me know your recommendations, brands and models and what you like about them.

Thanks in advance.

The Red Warrior:
V1.
Likes:
Almost no false alerts
Tells you the direction of the threat
Extremely good range

Dislikes:
Iíve now got it set to only detect Ka band as I turned off laser when cars started coming out with laser guided cruise control and crash avoidance. This means I have no laser protection.

However, newer models have software to overcome this and I could get mine updated for a fee, but that means sending it back to the USA to be done.

First - never leave your detector in your car.

Forget the Valentines, they (including latest V2) work best with a 3rd party app on a mobile phone - a right pain to use.

Double the pain as older V1's also need a separate BlueTooth module.

Depending on budget and the features you want, look at the latest models from Radenso, Uniden, Escort et al.

Expect to spend $1000+

And never leave your detector in your car.

:D

Was looking at the Uniden R7 myself, but being LHD specific display, seems to be a very big pain to use. As I ideally would not want it in the right corner of my windscreen.

The new Radenso does look very good, not too much testing on release, due to inability to produce thanks to Mr Covid and shortage supplies.
Finally, they have become available again, on paper they do look really good, even better value compared to a uniden R7 or Escort 9700XL (or whatever it's called)
Just not sure if the firmware works correctly in NZ like much of the imported R7 units, I believe there is some guy that provides NZ-specific firmware and updates for pretty much most updateable radar detectors now on the market. Spotted this on the NZ-based part of the international radar forum and mentioned it on some Facebook groups too.

schattenblau:
I have an R7 and the LHD configuration is no problem even if you have the unit mounted along the centreline of the windscreen.

The new R8 is still LHD but the display is bigger and less angled.
Unit is pretty damn ugly though but there are performance improvements over the R7.

Yes you can load NZ developed 3rd party FW and database onto an imported R7
Overseas users can download FW over the net but Uniden NZ only provide camera database updates, to update the operating system you have to send the unit back to base - so 1990s !
