190KM NZ New United Grey Mk5 R32 Revival - "DUB V6"

I know this may seem a bit odd being a Mk5 but let?s take a minute to realise the early Mk5?s are over 15 years old now!

I picked this little gem up in March from the dark and gloomy corners of ?Walkworth Buy Sell Facebook Group? It even came with a captain obvious personalised plate. NZ New Mk5 R32 one of only 23 remaining In LA7T United Grey Metallic. It was later revealed the car was actually even further north in Leigh! It was filthy inside and out and it had done 192kms, but no dents and minimal scratches and stone chips. It had FSH and was with Continental VW until 2016. This chap had had it just over a year but the previous owner to him had it for 8 years. I could tell this was a tidy car with his 1 year of his filth on it.

A deal was done and now to start bringing it back up to scratch!

Stopped in to see Nana who was on the 1hr20min route home "How is this one different from your other VW" she said.

First port of call, 1 minute and 35 seconds after arriving home was the exhaust tips. Cant stand dirty exhaust tips!

The following weekend I did a thorough foam and hand wash, so much contamination/grit in paint. Will definitely be getting a clay bar soon.

Pulled apart the boot for a clean to find a bright yellow Golf T for me to use for the exhaust ?Flapper Mod?. Too bad I had just wasted $10 on a pack of 100 of them for Rebel Sport as it was all they had!

10-minute splash of soap and degreaser. Didn?t even need engine shine. Will have to attack the rocker cover with something at a later date as it has oxidised.

On to the Interior

I?m not sure what kind of hairs those are on the dash but I?m glad they are gone!

I couldn?t work out why the ?DSG? inscription on the gear knob didn?t look right then I looked a little closer? the knob still needs a clean around the edges but I couldn?t use the toothpick around the edges of the leather.

I?m normally quite adversarial towards fake Carbon fibre/Carbon fibre wrap but this was the best solution for this problem as removing the trim to paint it is too risky with the age of the clips these days. I?m certainly not getting a job at vinyl shop anytime soon, but it?s an improvement none the less.

Few new switches courtesy of a certain Chinese based multinational conglomerate?

Found this little artefact under the seat!

I'm no Audiophile but as I far I can ascertain this head unit was installed in the car when it was new and it has absolutely ZERO features. Didnt work with the steering wheel controls and Doesn't even AUX! If it has the OEM unit I would have left it alone. Opted for a CarPlay capable unit which I've always wanted to have in car.

Very satisfying getting all those little things sorted. The head unit looks pretty OEM too and nice to have those additional features.

I never understand the logic choosing those super obvious personalised plates, maybe it's just me haha.
Looking good, the shift lever surround is easy to take apart and not "that" brittle, take it all apart and scrub it with oven cleaner back to bare plastic. Then paint with a satin black.

With you loud and clear on the plate. Just inherited it and it?s a euro plate.

Yea might have another crack at the trim. Didn?t even need any solvents or cleaners literally could peel it off with my fingers. I hate trim it always ends in tears for me 😂.

Got around to Clay bar, cut and polish. I expected the bonnet to be the worst but it check it out after I did the boot/rear bumper, Yuck!

The beading the following morning was sublime.

Ordered some replacement plates for the express purpose of having no holes. $50 well spent in my books.

Love the finer details with this revival! My favorite weapon of choice for these type of projects is my trusty Steam Cleaner. works wonders on leather.

WRT to the replacement plates - do you mind me asking where you got them from? Looking for a set of euro plates but only place I can see them available is on Kiwiplate, and definitely not at the price you mentioned :-)
