Rust-ridden mk3 end of life plans
« on: February 23, 2023, 08:29:34 pm »
Hey all, I'm looking at year 10 of owning my 97 GTI (abf) and unfortunately without a garage it's succumbed to some pretty bad rust in the tail and other bits here and there. I've repaired what I can but it's ever expanding and I don't think I'll pay for any more major repairs (I do the smaller ones myself). Part of the reason is I seem to have bad luck with panel beaters and mechanics who say they can do something and then fail to do it but still want to charge me for the effort... I guess beggars can't be choosers. 242k on the clock but still runs great.

I'm just looking for advice of what to do with it when I decide to move on. Do I send it to the scrap? Part out some of the better pieces (recaros)? Or do you think someone will still buy it?

If the rust is terminal and you have the space, I'd part it out or try selling it as a complete parts car?

Where are you located, someone may be interested in taking it off your hands.

Yeah seems like it's probably bad enough to be unrepairable eventually. I'm in auckland, I'll probably sell it whole i suppose. Just gutted cause I like it so much
