Torsen vs haldex in audi

Hi vaskers,

Been looking this up but need some clarity. I have learned that audi quattro cars with longitudinally mounted engines have torsen 4wd systems and those with transverse mounted engines have haldex systems, is this correct?

Differences I have learned between the 2 systems are:

Torsen is permanently 4wd usually running at 50 / 50 front and rear and also maintenance free meaning no oil changes. Some serious euro loving people call this system the "real quattro"

Haldex is usually "on demand" via its coupling system which runs rear only when detecting slipping on front, Oil and coupling oil / filter changes required.

So in theory,  A3 or S3 / RS3 etc runs haldex systems meaning "quattro"
Whilst A4 or S4 / RS4 etc runs torsen systems meaning QUATTRO!

What say the experts on these? Will be nice to get some clarity.
Current: 2010 Audi A4 2.7 TDI silver, 2007 Audi A4 2.0T DTM sprint blue, 2007 VW Golf V 2.0 TDI BKD 4motion manual white.
Past: 2004 Golf R32 black pearlescent, 2009 Audi S3 white, 2004 Audi A4 B6 1.8T blue, 99 Golf mk4 GTI black, 2005 Audi A4 B7 2.0T black.

There were two types of Torsen centre diff used too...

The B6/B7 A4, B6 S4, & 2005.5 B7 S4 all have the Torsen T2 center differential. This center differential features the following:
- 50/50 front/rear default torque split under normal conditions.
- from 67/33 to 33/67 front/rear torque split depending on the conditions. This is why it is referred to as a 2:1 center differential.

The 2006-2008 B7 S4 & B7 RS4 all have the Torsen T3 center differential. This center differential features the following:
- 40/60 front/rear default torque split under normal conditions.
- from 80/20 to 20/80 front/rear torque split depending on the conditions. This is why it is referred to as a 4:1 center differential.

The B7 RS4 is considered by many to be peak Quattro.

yup... The true quattro is the longitudinal engine. The transverse mounted engines are most likely better off being FWD, rather than Haldex.
