Hi, fellow NZ Audi aficionado's. Help! I bought a 2.6, V6, 97, ex Jap. A4 auto, in good condition, for NZD10K, after arriving in NZ from the UK, a few months ago. I am used to driving a '94 6spd, 1.9 TDI A4 manual. The difference is staggering. The mechanics tell me the V6 is running well, but it is gutless in performance and achieves 13.9l/100 Km. The 1.9 performed far better (my wife has suggested Viagra for the V6, as she is used to the TDI) and achieved 5.5l/100km. Does anyone have similar experience? I spoke to Audi NZ and they told me that they don't bring in diesels? When I told them that I prefer TDI they told me that "NZ does'nt, so they won't bring them in". "I have to buy an Allroad, Q7 or Passat". The fuel's quality is OK in NZ, according to VW, so what's the deal? To me, R10 is probibally the most successfull racing car ever and underlines Audi's Vorsprung durch technik is not hype, but an engineering statement! Audi rules.

my Best Friend (a girl) had a B5 A4 TDI (was only 1 of 3 that were imported) it was her mums.. sadly it is now Resting in peices..someone pulled out at a roundabout and took her out.. shes ok but the car was damned..

they called it Terrance cos it sounded like a tractor!

gutsy little car..

ull be streched to find another..

only other thing i can suggest is maybe buy a TDI block (was one on trademe a few months ago) and do a transplant.. but that will be to much work

there are quite a few TDI golfs around..

my next door neighbor had a nogaro blue one now she has a mk5 polo  :-X

Leon, back to your subject...!  Amazing how threads get hijacked so soon and don't help your query.
Yes Audi NZ is right, up until recently Kiwis havent had the nouse to recognise a good TDi if they trip over one because I suspect we have been brainwashed by what we could get from the Orient.  That was the fairly uninspiring diesel choice.  However in the last few years with the cleaning up of diesel, the better carmakers have been able to compete.  Peugeot, Citreon, VW etc have made good inroads.
We own a 2001 Passat V6 TDi and its easily comparable with an A4.  In some ways its better in my opinion, I prefer the Passat lines to the A4 but with anything it's very much personal preference. We get around 7ltrs all up, down to 6.5 or so on highway and a little more if loaded/in traffic/particularly hilly or winding trips.

The major difference between the 2.6V6 petrol and even the 1.9TDi is the torque, or more importantly, where it occurs.  The Passat has max torque at 1500rpm so its always right there.  The petrol V6 is up above 5000 rpm from memory.  I sympathise with you as your A4 TDi in the UK would have been a nice car. In my opinion diesels are the way to go.  Unfortunately diesel owners get slammed with higher rego costs (go figure, the ACC levy is higher because we drive a modern, safe, fuel efficient diesel car, but that's another topic altogether!) and still get hammered with an archaic road user charge that dates back to when all diesel vehicles were by and large heavy vehicles that contributed more to road destruction.  However maybe in the next decade or so those in power might get it right.  Ever seen the Tui beer ads?!

Fuel consumption does seem high to me though.  The V6 should be good for 10-12ltrs average, they are known for not being particularly frugal and pulling around a heavy A4 body doesn't help. Especially if you do plenty of city driving.  They are only 110kw too, coupled to a slusher box makes for less than inspiring acceleration.  They go OK in a lighter 80 bodyshell.
So good luck, I'd give it a good run on the open road and see what you mileage your return, but still reckon nearly 14ltrs is too high.

I wouldn't contemplate an engine transplant - it the long run it'd be cheaper and loads less hassle to buy a TDi here. That's unless you are so mechanically inclined in which case you're like me and belong over on motorgeek.com anyway.  There's enough TDi's around to wait for a good one.

Cheers, and welcome to vask.

Hi, Wilco. Thanks for your reply, your insight helps. I have been considering a transplant, but I've been spoilt by the ease of running a company Audi [really easy to get used to] and I don't know how the service backup and breakers yards in NZ, yet. I test drove a new 2l Passat recently. It is a great car, but I am not sure what it is that I am missing in the feel of the car. Perhaps the ergonomic detailing?
It also seemed to have a high centre of gravity to me. I liked the price, though. I shall probibally try to get hold of an ex demo model with paddles in the new year. Did you know that the 2005 world car of the year is only 100kg's heavier than an A4 [It's awesome, the 3l TDI is first on my wish-list ]? I'll bet you do!

I thought Audi sold the 2.0TDI A3, 2.0TDI A4 and 3.0 V6 TDI A6 in NZ?

It's a shame we didn't get many B5 TDi's. Audi doesn't even sell diesels in Japan or Singapore either so we can't get them as imports  >:(
