Towbars
« on: January 23, 2007, 08:51:31 AM »
Well we're pulling out so much garden waste from our 1/4 acre that either we have to get a skip every two months or I'll have to relent and fit a towbar to the Octavia.

Can anyone tell me a ballpark figure for a towbar? Presumably it'll be similar to a mkIV Golf but the overhang is bigger.

Cheers guys

$400 to $1000.  Depends where you go.  Try "best bars"

Just called the dealer to see - $420 for the bits, + $300 fitting.
Doesn't seem bad for an official VAG one.
I'd fit it myself I think.

By the way I was highly amused - he referred to the bit that sticks up with the ball on the end as the "donkey cock" !

just make sure it is a 1"7/8 ball. My genuine audi one is 50mm which is fine for my bike rack, but that's it.

Has anyone had any experience of getting the towbar wiring installed on a later model Audi. I have the OEM detachable tow bar on my 2002 A4, and when I asked the dealer about wiring I think from memory it was going to be more than $1500 (due to optical wiring?).

Seems like there is a cheaper relay option offered aftermarket in the UK but I haven't seen anything here. Have already asked Best Bars and was told to source the OEM loom first, not very helpful.

If it's the genuine towbar with the big one piece "donkey cock" then it will be a 50mm ball which can not be changed, so if your trailer is a 1 7/8ths you will have to change the hitch.

The ball is not actually the probablem. Its that I don't have any electical connection to the trailer so I was asking if there is a cheaper after market option.

Sorry, my reply was to MTMS3's post about ball size.

I don't think there is any other wiring available in NZ unless you want to hunt around on the net looking for a cheaper option. $1500 sounds far too much for wiring though, that's more like the price of a complete towbar and wiring. I'll have a look at work tomorrow.
